Dune: Awakening is a survival action RPG set on Arrakis, where thirst, heat, exploration, crafting and base-building shape the journey. Push Square’s PS5 review found its progression and Dune details compelling, though repetitive enemies, uneven visuals and some drawn-out quests hold it back. Its full single-player mode makes the game more flexible, but the PlayStation Store still says online play is required.
What is Dune: Awakening?
Dune: Awakening is Funcom’s open-world survival game with adventure and RPG elements, set in an alternate version of the Dune universe where Paul Atreides was never born. On Arrakis, survival means managing the planet’s harsh climate, finding and refining water, learning abilities through the Imperium’s schools, and building a base while crafting equipment and vehicles. The PlayStation Store describes it as a single- and multiplayer game.

Push Square’s Aaron Bayne awarded the PS5 version 8/10. That score reflects one reviewer’s assessment, not a performance benchmark or a consensus rating. Bayne’s central impression is that the game’s systems become absorbing once the initial survival routine grows into a wider cycle of exploration, combat and progression.
How do crafting and progression feel?
A survival loop that opens up
In Push Square’s account, the early rhythm is practical: manage thirst and heat, collect resources, then return to a base that gradually becomes more useful. Exploration, combat, quests and research points feed into new schematics and skill unlocks. The reviewer particularly valued upgrades that change what a player can do on an expedition: new tools and traversal equipment make more of Arrakis accessible, so progression affects the shape of play rather than just improving numbers.

Base-building and complexity
Bayne found base-building straightforward to handle on console and enjoyable as a continuing part of the game. He also describes the crafting loop as dense but approachable: there is plenty to learn, yet the systems gave him reasons to keep advancing after establishing an initial base. Those are review impressions rather than independently verified test results.
What are the review’s main drawbacks?
Enemy variety
Push Square says enemies can begin to feel repetitive. If you want combat encounters to keep introducing substantially different opponents, that is one of the review’s clearest reservations.

Both single-player and private multiplayer servers offer extensive customization options, allowing you to scale difficulty and tune gameplay options however you like.
Visual consistency
The review describes the visuals as uneven. It does not provide a numerical technical analysis, so this is a qualitative observation, not a measured account of image quality or frame rate.
Fremen trial quests
Some sequential Fremen trials became tedious for the reviewer. In particular, he found exploration could be interrupted when a discovered trial was unavailable because it was not yet the next one in the required sequence.

How does single-player work on PS5?
Funcom’s September console update introduced a full single-player mode, gameplay customization, the conclusion to Book One, and gameplay and combat balance changes. PlayStation Blog says the mode lets players proceed at their own pace. The Store also lists private multiplayer with friends on a shared server and public-server play, so the main choice is between a more personal pace and joining other players.
There is an important online caveat: the PlayStation Store listing says online play is required, even though it describes a full single-player mode. Do not assume that solo play means offline play. The Store lists PS Plus as required for online play and says public sessions support up to 60 online players with PS Plus; that is a stated product capability, not a measured player count.

PS5 features and performance
The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 game as PS5 Pro Enhanced and says it supports DualSense vibration and trigger effects. In Push Square’s review, tested on PS5 Pro, Bayne reports fairly stable frame rates on PS5 and PS5 Pro and some DualSense haptics. The review supplies no frame-rate number or benchmark conditions, so those observations should not be read as a quantified performance guarantee.
Digital or physical: what are the options?
Digital edition
The PlayStation Store lists September 22, 2026 as the PS5 release date. At the time of the cited Store listing, the US digital Standard Edition was $49.99. That is a regional, time-sensitive listing price, not a universal or permanent price; check your local Store for current availability and cost.

PS5 disc edition
Funcom announced a PS5 physical edition for September 22, 2026. Its announced distribution was by Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and by Solutions 2 GO in North and South America. The announcement also said Japan would receive a retail release, with its publisher to be announced at that time.
The limited-time edition extras named in Funcom’s announcement were an exclusive Terrarium of Muad’Dib for placement in a base and a global color swatch. Funcom’s later community update describes a worldwide PS5 disc edition and points to Amazon and Bandai Namco preorder options. Check a regional retailer for current stock and confirm exactly which edition and extras it offers. The available information does not establish a lasting gameplay-content difference between disc and digital versions.
Should you play Dune: Awakening on PS5?
Push Square’s 8/10 review makes the game most appealing for players who enjoy survival systems that feed into crafting, exploration and a growing base, and who want a detailed Dune setting. Its new single-player mode adds a more self-directed way to experience the game. The same review’s cautions—repetitive enemies, inconsistent visuals and some restrictive, tedious quest sequences—matter if variety and uninterrupted exploration are priorities.
For platform and purchase decisions, the key distinction is not simply solo versus multiplayer: the Store still lists online play as required. Digital buyers should check their regional Store listing; disc buyers should verify the local retailer’s edition contents and stock.
