Peter Molyneux says the upcoming Fable will be the first entry in the series he can experience as a player rather than as someone making it. He is eager to play, though the reveal initially struck him as too focused on fairy-tale themes; later gameplay videos eased that concern.
Why Molyneux says this Fable is different for him
Molyneux says he played the Fable games repeatedly while working on them. “I end up playing whichever game I’m making hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of times,” he said, according to FRVR’s account of a PCGamesN interview.

That is the distinction behind his description of the new game as the first Fable he can really play “as a gamer.” He told PCGamesN, as quoted by FRVR: “So, in one way, this version of Fable will be the first Fable I’ve really played as a gamer. And that’s going to be absolutely fascinating to play. I can’t wait.” His “hundreds” phrasing is an expression of repeated development play, not a measured count.
What he thought of the reveal and later gameplay
His first reservation
FRVR reports that Molyneux was initially “a little bit worried” by the reveal because it seemed “a bit too fairytale-ish.” That early hesitation sat alongside his excitement about eventually experiencing the game outside his development role.

Gameplay videos reassured him
His view became more positive after watching later gameplay videos. “I’m very encouraged by their latest gameplay videos,” he said, according to FRVR. He added: “They’re keeping a lot of what made Fable different and special.”
What he still wants to see
Molyneux remains curious about the alignment system and how it will affect the world visually. FRVR quotes him as saying he is “still curious about the alignment system, and how that visually affects the world,” while adding that he will be “first in the line to play it.” That leaves a specific question for the new game: how visibly the player’s alignment will shape the world around them.

Reported release timing and platforms
FRVR reports a February 23, 2027 release for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. That timing and platform list are secondary reporting, not an official announcement cited here, so treat them as reported rather than settled launch details.
What this does—and does not—say about Game Pass
Xbox Wire’s August 24, 2026 post lists Fable Anniversary among games in curated Xbox Game Pass collections. That refers to an earlier Fable game; it does not confirm that the upcoming entry will be available through Game Pass.
