Risky Woods is a 1992 fantasy side-scrolling platform game in which warrior Rohan battles through dangerous terrain to free monks turned to stone by Draxos. Developed by Dinamic Software and Zeus Software and published by Electronic Arts, it was released for Amiga, Atari ST, MS-DOS, and Mega Drive/Genesis.

What is Risky Woods?

In Risky Woods, Rohan enters the Lost Lands after Draxos and his forces petrify the ancient monks who guard them. His task is to rescue the statues and make it through the stages. The game combines side-scrolling platform traversal with enemies, hazards, a time limit, and combat.

Electronic Arts’ 1992–1993 catalog advertised 12 levels, 8 landscapes, and more than 150 screens. DeVuego describes the structure as four zones with two stages each. These are distinct descriptions of the game’s scale; the catalog’s advertised level and screen counts should not be treated as interchangeable with DeVuego’s zone-and-stage breakdown.

How does freeing the monks work?

Each stage asks Rohan to find and free petrified monks while reaching its end before time expires. DeVuego’s account says that if Rohan does not free all the statues, the stage must be repeated. This makes rescue part of stage completion, not merely an optional detour.

Was Risky Woods any good?

Contemporary opinions were mixed, and the surviving magazine ratings are individual reviews rather than an aggregate score. Jonathan Maddock’s Amiga Computing review (September 1992) awarded 80%. He praised the presentation, writing, “The presentation is as slick as they come, making it look very attractive.” He also criticized moments he considered unfair, including deaths the player could not control.

Matthew Squires’s Amiga Power review (July 1992) awarded 82%. He described it as atmospheric and action-packed, while arguing it lacked variation and depth: “Lacking variation and depth, Risky Woods does compensate with plenty of frenzied, and atmospheric platform action.” Taken together, the reviews suggest a visually appealing, energetic platform game whose challenge and limited variety could frustrate some players.
