Is Taylor Sheridan writing Sicario 3?
The current screenplay is attributed to Steven Knight, not Taylor Sheridan. Sheridan wrote the first two films. That establishes a change in the reported screenwriter, but it does not establish that Sheridan has no other involvement: TheWrap’s report does not fully describe every possible producer, story, or consulting role.

TheWrap also says earlier drafts were attempted by other writers, naming Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen on a prior draft. Those earlier efforts do not change the current screenplay attribution in the October 5 report.
Why do reports differ about the writer and director?
The status became more specific over time. On August 24, 2026, The Independent quoted Josh Brolin saying the film “is happening” and production would begin “soon.” At that point, the outlet said no director or cast had been announced and Sheridan’s return as writer was unconfirmed. The later, more detailed October 5 report named Knight, McKinley, and the returning cast. The Independent’s August 24 report records that earlier stage of development.

A Production List entry last updated October 6, 2026 still lists Sheridan as writer and names no director. That tracker entry conflicts with TheWrap’s more detailed October 5 account; the reason for the difference is not established. It should be read as a dated listing, not as confirmation that Sheridan remains the writer. Production List’s entry reflects its own listing status.
When will Sicario 3 start filming, and when will it be released?
TheWrap reports that production is slated to begin in early 2027. That is a planned start, not confirmation that filming has begun. The same report says the film is to be shopped to potential studios, and does not name a distributor or release date. No release timing can be established from these reports.

What is known about the story?
TheWrap says plot details have not been disclosed. In 2016, Day of the Soldado director Stefano Sollima described an earlier creative idea as “three anthology movies with some of the core actors and [set] in the same world,” as quoted by The Independent. That historical comment is not confirmation of the third film’s current plot or structure.
