You can play Nintendo Switch Sports with a compatible Nintendo Switch-family console and Joy-Con controllers; you do not need real balls, rackets, or cleats. The main exception is Soccer Shoot-Out, which requires a Leg Strap and a standard Joy-Con. Whether you need to buy a strap depends on your game edition.
What you need for ordinary play
- A compatible Nintendo Switch-family console and Joy-Con controllers. The required controller setup varies by sport; the game does not support Handheld Mode, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. Nintendo’s controller compatibility guidance.
- No real sports equipment: the game uses motion controls, so you do not need a real ball, racket, or cleats. Nintendo’s explanation of the controls.
When you need a Leg Strap
The Leg Strap is required for Soccer Shoot-Out. It is optional for other play, though it can also be used for foot-based Soccer controls. Nintendo describes the requirement as applying to “some Soccer game play.” Nintendo Switch Sports official site.
Physical and digital editions
The physical game edition includes one Leg Strap. The digital edition does not include the accessory; if you want to play Soccer Shoot-Out, buy a compatible strap separately. Check the contents of the edition you are purchasing before ordering an additional strap. Nintendo says the Leg Strap from Ring Fit Adventure is also compatible. Nintendo’s game information.
How to fit it
- Place the strap at the center of either thigh.
- Insert a left Joy-Con with its control stick facing outward.
- Tighten the strap so it will not slip, but do not overtighten it. Nintendo’s setup guide.
Joy-Con 2 compatibility
Joy-Con 2 controllers do not fit or work with the Leg Strap. For Soccer Shoot-Out or other strap-based play, use a standard Joy-Con that is compatible with the strap. Nintendo’s controller compatibility guidance; Nintendo’s compatibility information.

Do you need extra Joy-Con for local multiplayer?
Possibly. Controller requirements depend on the sport and the number of local players, so do not assume one setup works for every match. Nintendo notes that additional accessories may be needed for multiplayer. Check the controller requirements for your sport and player count before buying extra Joy-Con. Is Nintendo Switch Online an accessory?
