Usually, no: a PlayStation console without a disc drive cannot read physical game discs. Some newer PS5 Digital Edition models and PS5 Pro can use Sony’s detachable CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive, but the original PS5 Digital Edition (CFI-1000) cannot. Check your console’s exact model group before buying an add-on.
Can a digital-only PlayStation play physical games?
Not unless the console has a built-in disc drive or supports a compatible add-on drive. A physical game disc must be read by hardware; owning the disc does not provide the digital game license or download needed to play it on a console without a drive.
Sony says the PS5 Digital Edition in the CFI-1000 model group does not support disc-based games or media. For selected later PS5 Digital Edition models and PS5 Pro, Sony sells a detachable drive, model CFI-ZDD1. Compatibility depends on the console’s model group—not simply the words “Digital Edition.”
Which PS5 Digital Edition models can use a disc drive?
Sony’s US product listing names PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000/CFI-2100 model groups and PS5 Pro as compatible with the CFI-ZDD1 drive. Sony’s setup support page describes compatibility as PS5 CFI-2000/7000 model groups. Because the pages use overlapping but not identical group labels, verify your exact model number against the current official compatibility information for your region before purchasing.

| Console | Physical-disc option | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition, CFI-1000 | No supported disc route; Sony says this group does not support disc-based games or media. | Identify the CFI-1000 model group. |

| PS5 with a built-in disc drive | Insert a supported disc. | Confirm the console listing is the disc configuration. |
See Sony’s detachable PS5 disc drive listing and disc-drive setup guidance for current compatibility details.
How to check compatibility and set up Sony’s detachable drive
- Find the console’s model number. Check the label on the console and note its CFI model group; do not rely on “Digital Edition” alone.
- Confirm the exact model is supported. Compare the model group with Sony’s current regional product and support pages before ordering the CFI-ZDD1.
- Attach the drive as directed. Follow Sony’s setup instructions for your console model.
- Connect to the internet during setup. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the detachable drive with the console.
What about PS4 and older PlayStation discs?
PS4 discs cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition. On a PS5 with a disc drive, supported PS4 games can be played from disc, and the disc must remain inserted while playing. Sony also says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs, so adding a drive does not make every PlayStation generation’s discs playable. See Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 backward-compatibility guidance.

If you already own a compatible newer digital PS5 or PS5 Pro and want to use discs, check whether the CFI-ZDD1 is supported by your exact model. If you have the CFI-1000 Digital Edition, Sony does not provide a supported disc-drive option for it. If you are choosing a console and physical games are important to your library, look for a PS5 configuration with a built-in disc drive rather than assuming a digital model can be upgraded later.
