Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if you want Nintendo exclusives, an included dock for handheld, tabletop, and TV play, or access to compatible games from your Switch library. Choose Steam Deck OLED if your games are on Steam and you want a portable PC with an OLED screen, PC-style connectivity, and UHS-I microSD expansion. Before buying either, check compatibility for the specific games you plan to play: neither system’s library should be treated as universally compatible.
Start with the games you want to play
The biggest difference is the library and platform, not a simple hardware score. Nintendo Switch 2 is built around Nintendo software, including Mario Kart World, and plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Steam Deck OLED is a portable PC running SteamOS 3, centered on games available through Steam.
Make a short list of your must-play games and where you own them. A game you already own on Switch is not automatically available on Steam Deck, and owning a PC version does not mean it will work identically on every device. Check individual titles and storefronts before choosing.
Is Switch 2 worth it if you already own a Switch?
It can be, particularly if you want Switch 2 games or would like to continue playing compatible Switch titles on the newer system. Nintendo cautions that some original Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible. Use Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information to check the games that matter to you rather than assuming the whole library transfers without exceptions.

Can Steam Deck play Nintendo Switch games?
Steam Deck is a PC gaming device, not a Nintendo Switch, and the official Steam Deck specifications do not establish support for Nintendo Switch games. If you want Nintendo’s games and Switch library, Switch 2 is the straightforward choice.
Screen and play modes
| Feature | Nintendo Switch 2 | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in screen | 7.9-inch LCD, 1920 × 1080, HDR10, variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz (Nintendo specification) | 7.4-inch OLED, 1280 × 800, HDR, refresh rate up to 90 Hz (Valve specification) |
| TV or external display | Included dock enables TV mode; Nintendo lists output up to 3840 × 2160 (4K) at 60 fps, subject to game and display support | USB-C supports external displays and peripherals; a Steam Deck Docking Station or compatible USB-C dock is optional |
| Play modes | Handheld, tabletop, and TV | Portable PC; can connect to an external display |
| Weight | Approximately 1.18 lb with Joy-Con 2 attached (Nintendo specification) | Approximately 640 g (about 1.41 lb; Valve specification) |
Switch 2 is the more direct fit if you want one console that moves between handheld, tabletop, and television play, with the dock included. Steam Deck offers PC-style external-display and peripheral connections, but its dock is an optional accessory. Advanced display features and TV output depend on the game and compatible display.
Rank #2
- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
The screens trade different strengths. Switch 2 has the higher listed resolution and refresh-rate ceiling; Steam Deck OLED uses an OLED panel and supports HDR. Those specifications alone do not establish which looks better in every game: panel type, resolution, game support, and your preferences all matter.
Battery life: manufacturer estimates, not a head-to-head test
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours for Switch 2, depending on the game. Valve estimates approximately 3–12 hours of gameplay for Steam Deck OLED; its listed battery capacity is 50 Wh. These are each manufacturer’s estimates under varying use conditions, not results from a controlled comparison, so they should not be read as a direct promise that one lasts longer in the same game or setting.

Storage and expansion
| Storage | Nintendo Switch 2 | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in storage | 256 GB UFS | 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe SSD models listed by Valve |
| Card expansion | microSD Express cards up to 2 TB for game storage | UHS-I microSD cards |
Card type matters. For Switch 2 game storage, buy a microSD Express card; Nintendo says standard microSD cards can only be used to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch. Steam Deck’s documented expansion path is a UHS-I microSD card.
Price and availability
Valve’s May 27, 2026 U.S. pricing update listed Steam Deck OLED at $789 for 512 GB and $949 for 1 TB. These are point-in-time U.S. prices, not a guarantee of current local availability. A comparable Switch 2 price is not established here, so check both manufacturers’ current local listings and any bundles before comparing total cost; the capacities and included accessories are not equivalent.

- Compact, lightweight handheld system
- Available in a range of fun colors
- Online and local wireless multiplayer
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Which one should you buy?
- Choose Switch 2 if Nintendo exclusives are the priority, you want the included dock and hybrid console modes, or you want to play Switch games Nintendo confirms are compatible.
- Choose Steam Deck OLED if your must-play games are on Steam and you value a portable PC experience, an OLED screen, PC-oriented connections, and UHS-I microSD expansion.
- Pause and check compatibility if your decision hinges on a particular game. Nintendo identifies some Switch titles as unsupported or not fully compatible on Switch 2; Steam Deck playability is title-specific, and universal compatibility is not established by Valve’s hardware specifications.
For official specifications, see Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications and Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications. Nintendo’s Switch 2 feature page describes its modes and games; Valve’s Steam Deck OLED page carries the dated U.S. pricing update.
