If the linked email or account details were changed—or you cannot complete two-step verification—contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant.
Secure the email account linked to PSN
Your email inbox can be used to reset your PlayStation password, so secure it before relying on it for account recovery. Change the email password to a strong one you do not use elsewhere. If you cannot access or secure the mailbox, contact its provider first.
PlayStation recommends unique passwords and warns that an email account can provide access to other services. Do not reuse a password that may have been exposed in the incident. See PlayStation’s guidance for compromised accounts and unauthorized charges and its account security best practices.
Recover your PlayStation account
If you can access the linked email
- Open Account Management.
- Select Trouble Signing In?, then Recover Your Account.
- Follow the instructions in the email PlayStation sends you. Use the recovery link yourself and do not share it or your credentials.
If the hacker changed your email or you cannot use it
If you no longer have access to the linked email, forgot which address you used, or see an unrecognized change to your sign-in ID or password, use PlayStation’s account recovery guidance to reach its Online Assistant or Support. These cases need support-assisted recovery rather than the usual email reset.

Avoid third-party account-recovery services and anyone who asks for your password or verification codes. PlayStation warns that scammers may claim your account was reported and offer to restore it. Use official PlayStation support channels.
Sign out other devices and check for unauthorized activity
After you regain access, end existing PlayStation sessions so a person who still has an active session cannot keep using the account. In Account Management, go to Security and select Sign Out on All Devices. Then update your sign-in method with a unique password or passkey. PlayStation documents the sign-out control in its sign-in and sign-out guidance.

Review your transaction history for unfamiliar purchases. If you find unauthorized charges or cannot change account credentials, contact PlayStation Support and consult its refund and cancellation guidance. Refund eligibility is subject to limitations; a report does not guarantee reimbursement.
If a console was stolen, sign out on all devices, then follow PlayStation’s compromised-account guidance on deactivating consoles and consider removing saved payment methods. Removing a payment method is a precaution, not a substitute for securing the account.

Get past two-step verification or set up a passkey
If you are blocked by two-step verification
If you cannot receive a verification code, enter one of your saved backup codes. PlayStation provides 10 single-use codes for two-step verification; each code works once. If you do not have a usable code or no longer have the phone or number, contact PlayStation through its two-step verification recovery guidance.
If you want to switch to a passkey
PlayStation supports passkeys as a sign-in method. To configure one, use Account Management, open Security, and follow the passkey setup or management options in PlayStation’s passkey guide. The guide covers PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website and app, and Mac Remote Play, with compatibility caveats for some device and operating-system combinations. If setup fails, consult the guide’s troubleshooting notes rather than assuming a hardware security key will solve the issue; PlayStation notes that some keys can encounter problems.

Reduce the chance of another compromise
- Use a different, strong password for PSN and every other account. A password manager can help generate and store unique passwords; it is optional.
- Do not share your sign-in details or verification codes, and avoid signing in on public or shared devices.
- Treat unexpected direct messages, QR codes, and offers of free currency with caution. Do not enter PSN credentials on sites promising free in-game currency.
- Keep two-step verification backup codes somewhere private but accessible if your phone is lost.
- Consider enabling Require Password at Checkout to add protection to purchases. PlayStation says this option is incompatible with accounts that use passkeys, so choose the control that fits your sign-in method.
