Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition received generally favorable reviews, with a 76 Metascore from 31 critic reviews and an 8.0 user score from 281 ratings on Metacritic’s 2015 listing. Critics highlighted the expanded playable roster—especially the chance to play as Vergil, Lady, and Trish—but the added characters did not fix every campaign flaw inherited from the original game.

The critical response was not uniform. Some review copy praised the added characters and their distinct combat styles; other criticism focused on design problems carried over from the original. The aggregate score is useful context, but the split points to the more practical question: whether the extra ways to play outweigh the campaign’s lingering frustrations for you.
What the Special Edition adds
The edition expands the playable roster to five: returning characters Nero and Dante are joined by Vergil, Lady, and Trish. PlayStation Blog described the PS4 version as bringing additional modes, gameplay and visual improvements, and a larger roster. The strongest review appeal is the opportunity to revisit the action through these additional characters and their different combat styles.

- Experience your Favorite MARVEL vs. CAPCOM classics All in One – Enjoy 7 of your favorite classic titles that helped shaped the MARVEL vs. CAPCOM universe both single player and online.
- To enhance your playability experience, we incorporated the favorite added features from Capcom Fighting Collection including gallery mode, quick save, training mode for all fighting titles, and the high score challenge.
- This collection also includes rollback net code for a smooth and enjoyable experience online. Play casually or competitively through casual, ranked, or custom matches using rules of your choosing!
That roster expansion should not be mistaken for proof of wholly separate story campaigns for each added character. The available descriptions support calling them additional playable characters, not separate full-length campaigns.
What critics liked—and what remained a drawback
The expanded roster gives returning players a reason to replay
Gaming Age, in review text reproduced on Metacritic, said the three additional characters could make another playthrough feel fresh for players who already liked the original. That captures the edition’s clearest strength: added character variety gives fans new combat approaches without requiring them to seek a different game.

New content does not redesign the underlying campaign
The expansion does not erase every criticism of the original game. X-ONE Magazine UK, in review text reproduced on Metacritic, argued that the design flaws remained frustrating and that the new content could not fully overcome them. If your main hope is a substantially redesigned campaign, the reviews offer reason to temper expectations.
Is it worth revisiting?
The Special Edition is most appealing if you already enjoy Devil May Cry 4 and want to explore more character styles in its action. It is a less compelling fit if you are primarily looking for a reworked campaign rather than an expanded return to the original game. The critic score supports a generally positive reception, while the review comments explain why that does not mean every part of the experience was refreshed.
