If the car icon is missing in Google Maps, first start turn-by-turn navigation and tap the blue arrow or the vehicle currently shown. Google’s documented avatar picker appears during navigation—not as a general Maps setting. If the picker opens but offers only the blue arrow, Google’s public help does not identify a definite cause or promise that every avatar is available to every user.
How to find the vehicle icon chooser
Google’s instructions apply while you are getting directions. Open a route and start navigation, then use the on-screen location marker to open the available driving avatars.
- In Google Maps, enter a destination and select Directions.
- Choose a driving route and tap Start to begin navigation.
- Tap the blue arrow or the vehicle icon currently displayed on the map.
- Swipe through the available vehicle avatars. If a color choice appears, select one.
- Tap Done.
These are the steps in Google Maps Help’s guide to choosing a driving avatar. Google says you can switch back to the blue arrow at any time by opening the same control and selecting it.
If the chooser shows only the blue arrow
If you have started navigation and the chooser opens, but the arrow is the only option, you have reached the right control; the desired avatar simply is not listed there. Google’s help page explains how to choose an available avatar, but does not specify which users, devices, app versions, or regions should see each option.

Reports in the Google Maps Help Community describe differing availability: an Android user said newer avatars appeared on family devices but not on an updated Pixel 7, while an iOS user reported seeing only the arrow after updating. In those threads, community replies suggested a gradual rollout as one possibility. That is a community hypothesis, not a confirmed Google diagnosis, and the reports do not establish how common the issue is. What to try next
- Update Google Maps. Check your device’s app store for an available update, then try the avatar control again during active navigation. An update is a sensible first check, but the available reports do not show that updating restores missing choices.
- Send feedback in Maps. If the option remains absent, report the issue from inside the app and describe your device, operating system, and what the chooser displays. A Product Expert advised in-app feedback in the iOS community discussion.
- On Android, consider clearing the app cache and restarting. This was suggested in the Android community thread, but it is community advice, not an official guaranteed fix. Menu labels and paths can vary by Android version and device.
Reinstalling is not a dependable fix: the cited iOS discussion reports that reinstalling did not restore the missing icons. The available accounts also do not establish that cache, permissions, or a device defect causes the missing-avatar menu.

Make sure it is the avatar menu—not a location problem
The vehicle avatar is a visual choice for the marker used during driving navigation. It is different from the blue location dot, route guidance arrows, and the navigation display on Android Auto or CarPlay. If Maps cannot locate you accurately or loses your position, that is a separate GPS or location issue; changing the avatar will not fix it.
Google’s GPS troubleshooting guidance covers location reception, including permissions, battery-saver settings, and signal obstructions. Those factors concern location accuracy, not why a vehicle-avatar chooser might list only the arrow.
