That means two things can be true at once: a new game can make sense on its own, and familiarity with the wider series can help you recognize more of its lore and connections. You do not have to finish the franchise to follow an individual game’s main story.
Which Resident Evil game should a newcomer start with?
There is no single required first game. Capcom USA staff recommend Resident Evil 2 (2019) as a jumping-on point, while recommending Resident Evil 7 biohazard for players looking for a particularly scary entry. PlayStation’s FAQ likewise says there is no definitive first game.

Resident Evil Village directly follows Resident Evil 7 biohazard. If you plan to play both and want the setup for the later story, play 7 first. You do not need to play the entire series in release order to follow this pair.

Other entries and the series timeline
Capcom’s official timeline identifies Resident Evil 2 (2019) and Resident Evil 3 (2020) as remakes, Village (2021) as a sequel to the seventh installment, and Resident Evil 4 (2023) as a remake. Those labels help distinguish remakes from direct sequels, but do not establish a mandatory play list for every game.
Connections between entries are part of the series’ design, not evidence that newcomers must start at the beginning. In an interview with Capcom USA, Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi described the game as neither a reboot nor a break from the canon: “It’s not a reboot and we’re not throwing away the series’ canonical storyline. It’s the new numbered title in the series and it’s a sequel to the existing mainline series titles.” Capcom USA’s interview makes clear that continuity can remain while a game still serves as a fresh entry point.

What about the newest mainline Resident Evil?
Capcom announced Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth main installment, with a release date of February 27, 2026. That date has passed. Capcom’s 2025 report describes a story following a new character that runs through the series’ lore, but the cited official material does not specify a required set of earlier games to play first. Familiarity may add context; the available guidance does not establish a mandatory prerequisite list.
