Choose what you need before looking at the discount. Then verify the exact item, full price, seller and return terms before paying. If an essential detail is unclear, pause and check rather than letting a countdown make the decision for you.
1. Decide what you need before comparing discounts
Write down the features you will not compromise on and set a budget that includes delivery costs. For a video game, that might mean the correct platform, edition, region, and whether you need a physical copy or a digital code. For hardware or accessories, note compatibility requirements such as console generation, connection type, or included components.
The Federal Trade Commission recommends deciding which product features matter and comparing products before buying. Its online shopping security tips put the question plainly: “Second, determine what’s most important to you about the item you’re thinking about buying.”
2. How do I know this is the right model?
Match the listing to the precise item you chose, not just a familiar product-family name, image, or discount badge. Record the manufacturer or model number and check the details that distinguish versions. In gaming, an edition may include different downloadable content, a different platform version, or a different physical format; confirm what the listing actually supplies.

- Included parts, games, accessories, subscriptions, or other bundle contents
Read the full product description and inspect the seller’s listing details. If a key distinction is missing or contradictory, ask the seller or compare another listing before ordering. The FTC’s online shopping guidance advises shoppers to check product details, seller information, and terms rather than relying on a listing’s headline alone.
3. Is this sale price actually a good deal?
Compare the total payable cost for the same model and condition. Add shipping, handling, taxes, fees, and any required bundle or add-on; a low displayed price can cease to be the lowest deal once those costs are included. Compare like with like: a new item is not directly equivalent to a refurbished one, and a base edition is not the same purchase as a bundle.

Price-comparison sites and alerts can help you find alternatives, but they do not guarantee a fair price or unbiased ranking. The FTC notes that some comparison sites may include paid placements. Check the details and total directly with the seller before deciding.
4. Check who is selling and how the order will be fulfilled
On a marketplace, identify the actual seller rather than assuming the platform itself is selling the item. Look for clear contact information, seller history or reputation, delivery expectations, and the marketplace’s stated protections. HTTPS means the connection is encrypted; it does not establish that the seller is legitimate.

5. Can I return a sale item?
Do not assume a sale or clearance purchase has the same return policy as a full-price item. Before checkout, find the policy for that exact seller and listing, and check:

A countdown timer or “last chance” message may be genuine, but it is not evidence that the offer is the right choice or the best available price. New Zealand Consumer Protection identifies fake discounts and countdown timers as possible pressure tactics; that does not mean every limited-time offer is false.

Use a short pause before checkout. Recheck the model, total cost, seller, and return terms. Ask yourself whether you would still choose this exact item if the timer were not visible. If a crucial detail is unclear, ask the seller or choose a listing whose terms you can verify.
7. Use this checklist before you pay
- Need: What exact item do I need, and which features are non-negotiable?
- Match: Does the listing match the brand, model, platform, edition, size or color, condition, and included components?
- Total: What will I actually pay after shipping, taxes, fees, and required extras?
- Seller: Who is selling and fulfilling the order, and how can I contact them?
- Exit options: What are the return deadline, shipping cost, fees, and sale-item exceptions?
- Urgency: Is the time limit changing my decision, or simply making me feel rushed?
- Unclear detail: Can I verify it with the seller or another listing before paying?
8. Keep your records and act promptly if something is wrong
Save the listing, order confirmation, seller messages, receipt, and the return policy that applied when you bought the item. If the item is wrong, defective, or does not arrive as promised, contact the seller promptly and keep a record of the exchange. Payment dispute options and remedies depend on your payment method, transaction, and jurisdiction; the FTC’s online shopping guidance explains steps U.S. consumers can consider when a purchase goes wrong.
