What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your new gaming PC is delivering unexpectedly low FPS, first reproduce the problem in the same game scene and confirm the game is using the intended graphics card. Then check game requirements and settings, updates, background workloads, temperatures, and clocks—in that order. There is no universal FPS target: performance depends on the game, resolution, settings, and hardware.
Start by defining the problem
Write down the affected game, resolution, graphics preset, and the frame rate you expected. Note whether performance is consistently low or starts dropping after several minutes. A steady low frame rate and brief stutters can have different causes, so test them separately.
Restart the PC, close unnecessary apps, and reproduce the issue in the same scene or repeatable section of gameplay. Record average FPS and, if your monitoring tool supports it, 1% low FPS. The latter helps reveal short drops that an average can hide. NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.7 User Guide documents average FPS, 1% low FPS, frame timing, component utilization, clocks, and temperatures as available measurements.
Check whether the game and settings match your hardware
Compare your CPU and graphics hardware with the game’s current system requirements. Minimum requirements indicate that a game can run; they do not promise high settings or a particular frame rate. FPS depends on the combined work of the CPU, graphics hardware, and RAM, as well as the game workload and settings, as explained in Intel’s guide to fixing low frame rates and EA’s PC graphics troubleshooting guidance.

For a controlled test, lower one or a small group of demanding settings—often shadows, reflections, or lighting—then replay the same scene. If needed, test game-specific options such as volumetric effects or render scale. Lowering render scale can improve performance but makes the image less sharp. Settings vary by game, so change them incrementally and compare rather than applying a preset and guessing what helped.
Make sure the game is using the right GPU
On a desktop with integrated and discrete graphics
Check that the monitor cable is plugged into an output on the graphics card, not the motherboard. AMD recommends using the discrete adapter for best performance when a system has both integrated and discrete graphics.

Set a Windows graphics preference
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, choose Options, and set it to High performance when multiple GPUs are available. Restart the game after changing the preference. Labels and availability can differ by Windows version and device. Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-game optimization guidance covers per-app graphics preferences.
Update Windows, the game, and graphics driver carefully
Install available Windows updates, game patches, and graphics drivers from the relevant manufacturer’s official channel. Updates can include fixes, but installing one does not guarantee higher FPS. Microsoft’s PC performance guidance recommends keeping Windows current; Intel also recommends current game and graphics software.

Perfect for gamers, students, content creators, and home office users seeking reliable performance without the hassle of building a PC themselves. The mature AM4 platform with DDR4 memory offers excellent value and proven stability.
If the slowdown began immediately after a graphics-driver update, consider testing a previous driver instead. Intel’s support guidance for FPS drops and high CPU usage while gaming includes rolling back a driver as a troubleshooting step. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the driver change affected the result.
Look for background workloads and power limits
While the game is running, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and inspect CPU and memory use. Close unnecessary apps and browser tabs, then repeat the same gameplay test. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance also recommends reviewing resource-heavy processes and startup apps.

On Windows, Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode > Best performance can be a useful conditional test when performance appears power-limited. Microsoft notes that this mode uses more power and may make a laptop warmer, so it is not automatically the best everyday setting for every system.
NVIDIA’s Power management mode guidance says Prefer Maximum Performance may help in certain applications when GPU clocks are incorrectly throttling and causing low FPS. Treat it as a targeted test for that symptom, not a setting to force globally.

Check temperatures, clocks, and hardware setup
Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, clocks, and utilization while reproducing the slowdown—especially if performance worsens after several minutes. High temperatures can cause a component to reduce its clock speed, but limits vary by exact model. Compare readings with the specifications for your CPU or graphics card rather than relying on a universal temperature cutoff. Intel’s FPS troubleshooting guidance discusses CPU throttling above specifications; AMD’s CPU performance and temperature guidance describes the roles of temperature, power, cooling, and airflow.
If readings suggest a cooling problem, check that fans operate and airflow is not obstructed. A cooler that is loose or unsuitable can also affect CPU performance. For a new prebuilt PC, contact the system builder before removing parts if you are unsure how to inspect the cooler or internal setup.
If performance or stability suggests a memory configuration issue, AMD recommends checking motherboard memory support, confirming that modules are from the same kit, and verifying they are installed in the recommended slots. Consult the motherboard manual or builder before reseating RAM; physical inspection is not an early step if you are unfamiliar with the hardware.
Use the pattern to narrow down the cause
- Only one game is affected: Check the developer’s support notes and repair or verify the installation through its launcher. For Steam, Intel’s support article describes verifying game files as one example. Compare another game or a built-in benchmark if available.
- Several games are affected: Focus on shared factors such as GPU selection, drivers, background workloads, temperatures, power behavior, and hardware setup.
- Lowering resolution or demanding settings materially improves FPS: The game workload or graphics settings may be exceeding what the current hardware can handle at the original configuration.
- FPS falls as temperatures rise or clocks change: Investigate cooling, airflow, and power behavior against the exact component specifications.
- The problem started after a change: Test the relevant driver, game patch, or setting by reverting that single change where practical.
If the problem persists across games after these checks, give the PC builder or relevant component vendor the exact parts, game and settings, repeatable FPS observations, driver version, and temperature and utilization readings. That information makes the symptoms easier to distinguish from a game-specific issue.
