In Where Winds Meet, improving your weapons means choosing among three different systems: replacing an outdated weapon, enhancing its equipment slot, or tuning that specific weapon. Check both equipped slots and your current Gear Tier first, then level both Martial Arts styles in your active pair. Before farming anything, select the missing material in the relevant upgrade menu and choose How to Obtain to see its listed sources.
Which weapon upgrade should you use?
| Action | What it improves | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Replace a weapon | The weapon equipped in a slot | Compare Gear Tier, attack attributes, set effect, and equipment requirements. An older tuned weapon can show higher current stats than a new untuned one. |
| Enhance a slot | The weapon slot, rather than one particular weapon | The enhancement remains when you replace the weapon. Check the displayed attack increase, material cost, and Coin cost before confirming. |
| Tune a weapon | An individual weapon | Tuning uses materials matched to the weapon’s Gear Tier and unlocks additional stat lines. Consider how long you expect to keep that item. |
These distinctions matter when deciding whether to spend resources now or save them for a likely replacement. The progression hub recommends setting a short-term goal and checking a guide’s source and version notes before making a costly decision: progression hub.
How to improve your equipped weapons
- Choose the weapon pairing you plan to use. Pick your Martial Arts styles before investing heavily in gear. Path Guide can help with combinations and tutorials, according to the combat guide: combat guide.
- Check both weapon slots. Open Develop → Gear and compare each weapon’s Gear Tier, attack attributes, set effect, and equipment requirements. Replace gear that is outdated for the tier you have reached, but compare its base attributes with your current item: tuning can make an older weapon’s displayed stats look better than an untuned replacement.
- Level both equipped Martial Arts styles. Each style has its own upgrade progress; improving one does not level the other. Martial Arts determine your weapon skills and their damage, so raise both styles to the highest level currently available to your character. If a style cannot progress further, check its Break Through requirements. See the combat guide for the described relationship between styles and weapon skills.
- Enhance the slot if the gain is worth the cost. Go to Develop → Gear → Enhance. Review the attack increase alongside the required materials and Coin cost before confirming. Since slot enhancement carries over when the weapon is replaced, weigh its longer-term value against the cost.
- Tune selectively. Tuning applies to an individual weapon, uses materials appropriate to its Gear Tier, and unlocks additional stat lines. Check the displayed cost and whether you expect to keep the weapon before spending materials.
- Find the exact materials in the game. In the upgrade-cost row, select the missing item and choose How to Obtain. For slot enhancement, the path is Develop → Gear → Enhance → Material → How to Obtain. Match the complete material name, tier, and quantity; listed sources may include shops, activities, merchants, or gathering locations. The materials guide describes this lookup process.
How to tell whether a weapon is an upgrade
Compare like with like rather than choosing by one displayed number. Check the weapon’s Gear Tier, attack attributes, set effect, and equipment requirements. Then account for tuning already applied to your current weapon: its displayed stats include that investment, while a new weapon may be untuned. If you are weighing an upgrade against saving resources, consider the immediate gain, whether the cost improves a slot or one item, the material tier and Coin cost, and how soon you expect to replace the weapon.
Check costs and sources in the live game
The procedural guidance for these menus comes from independent fan guides, not official publisher documentation, and does not establish one official version date for the mechanics. Costs, shop stock, rewards, menu labels, and material routes may change. Use the in-game How to Obtain list as your immediate check, and treat a guide’s details as version-sensitive—especially before a costly investment. The progression hub advises checking source and version notes: progression hub.
