Start with the Wild Rift role you most want to play, then choose a compact set of champions whose play patterns you enjoy and whose team contributions give you useful options. Compare candidates by role fit, preferred way of playing, and what they bring to a team. Riot does not prescribe a standard pool size, so keep yours small enough to practice consistently and review it when balance updates affect your picks.
Start with the role you want to practice
Choose the position you prefer and are willing to play regularly. Role fit is more than a label: Riot says its Ranked and Legendary Ranked evaluation updates consider role responsibilities and team contributions. That makes your intended job in a match a useful starting point for selecting champions.
Ranked may also offer incentives for roles in demand. Patch 7.3 introduced a Priority Role Bonus for Ranked matches from Platinum through Challenger. In the season described by those notes, Support, Jungle, and Any Position were listed as eligible roles; Riot says eligible roles are adjusted each season according to player preferences and matchmaking conditions. Treat that as a dated snapshot, not a permanent list, and check the current in-game display.
Riot’s Patch 7.3 guidance puts team outcomes ahead of protecting a personal rank number: “Your champion choice should be about what gives your team the best chance to win—not protecting a number.” Read Patch 7.3.

Choose a play pattern you enjoy
Within your role, name the kind of decisions you like making. For example, you might prefer to initiate fights, protect allies, or deal sustained damage. These are plain-language filters to help you compare champions, not official Riot categories.
Enjoyment matters because a pool is useful only if you practice its champions. A pick that looks strong on paper but makes you avoid playing your role is a poor foundation for a consistent pool.

Compare candidates by what they do for the team
Use these axes to narrow your options. The first three reflect Riot’s emphasis on role and team contributions; comfort and balance sensitivity are practical selection criteria.

Patch notes can help explain a champion’s intended function without turning that description into a prescription. For instance, Riot’s Patch 7.2e said Nautilus needed help to “better fulfill his role as a tanky initiator.” That is an example of role and team job informing balance discussion, not a reason every player should add Nautilus. Keep the pool compact, then expand with a reason
Begin with a small core you can practice consistently. There is no official pool-size target established in the cited sources, so choose a number based on the time you actually have to play and learn.
Add another champion only when you can explain the different need it covers—for example, a distinct play pattern or team contribution. If two options ask you to do the same job and you enjoy one more, focusing practice on that one may make the pool easier to maintain.

Review your picks when the game changes
When a patch adjusts a champion or changes the item environment relevant to your picks, revisit your comparisons rather than assuming the pool remains equally suited. Riot’s official balance notes provide the clearest basis for checking what changed. The newest official balance article located for this article was Patch 7.3a, published September 29, 2026; it reports champion and item adjustments. That date identifies the latest source found here, not a guarantee that no later update exists. Read Patch 7.3a.
A simple review can be brief: check whether a relevant champion or item changed, decide whether the change affects the job you rely on that pick to perform, and adjust your practice focus if needed. Avoid treating any patch snapshot or tier list as permanent.
