The clearest confirmed difference is the era and premise: GTA VI is a present-day crime story that reaches across the fictional state of Leonida, while Red Dead Redemption 2 follows outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang through America in 1899. Rockstar has described RDR2’s frontier settings and activities in more detail. GTA VI had not yet launched as of October 7, 2026, so its final map scale, systemic depth, and moment-to-moment freedom could not yet be compared reliably.
Two open worlds built around different eras and stories
GTA VI: a modern crime story in Leonida
Rockstar’s official GTA VI Trailer 1 page and store listing describe Jason and Lucia as partners pulled into a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. That establishes the setting and story premise, not the complete boundaries of the playable map or a definitive list of its activities.

Rockstar’s promotional screenshots identify places such as Vice City, Leonida Keys, and Grassrivers. Those labels offer glimpses of the setting, but do not by themselves show how much of each place players can explore or how the areas connect.
Red Dead Redemption 2: an outlaw story in 1899
Rockstar places RDR2 in 1899. Its official product description follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang after a robbery goes wrong in Blackwater, as they try to survive across the rugged American heartland. The gang’s flight and outlaw life give the world a historical frontier context rather than a modern criminal one.

What is confirmed about their landscapes?
Rockstar’s description of RDR2 names a range of environments: snowy northern mountains, southern swamps, remote outposts, farms, and bustling towns. That gives readers a publisher-described sense of the world’s variety, though it is not a measurement of map size or a direct comparison with GTA VI.
For GTA VI, Rockstar’s confirmed framing is Leonida, with named locations including Vice City, Leonida Keys, and Grassrivers appearing in promotional material. The available official descriptions do not establish a full map or comparable detail about every region. A place name or screenshot is not proof of the area’s playable extent.

What can you do in each game?
RDR2: story activities and online roles
Rockstar’s product copy specifically mentions hunting and life with the gang as part of RDR2’s outlaw setting. It also describes Red Dead Online pursuits including Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner, and Naturalist. Those named roles are online activities; they should not be treated as a list of Story Mode systems.
GTA VI: premise confirmed, activity list not established
Rockstar’s official GTA VI descriptions establish Jason and Lucia’s criminal-conspiracy story, but do not verify a complete activity list or explain how particular systems work. Rockstar announced an extended look on August 27, 2026, saying it was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. That identifies the stated source of the promotional footage; it is not a player-tested account, nor does it confirm every pictured feature as a final release mechanic.

Is GTA 6’s map bigger or more immersive than RDR2’s?
There is not enough confirmed information to answer either question as fact. The official material cited here provides no comparable figures for playable map area, world density, activity count, or systemic depth. Likewise, immersion depends on how the finished games play and cannot be ranked from their setting descriptions or promotional claims alone.
Rockstar characterized GTA VI in its August 27, 2026 extended-look announcement as “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” That is the publisher’s promotional description of the GTA series, not an independent GTA VI-versus-RDR2 comparison.

Release and platform status as of October 7, 2026
Rockstar listed GTA VI’s release date as November 19, 2026, which was still in the future on October 7. Rockstar Support listed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as preorder platforms. Its platforms, editions, and versions page, last updated August 18, 2026, says the physical code-in-box version contains a download code and no disc. Code redemption may depend on region, so buyers should check the listing and account requirements for their territory.
