Choose the ecosystem that keeps more of your must-play games accessible. Before buying, list the titles you already own, note whether each is digital or on disc, and check support for the specific console edition you’re considering. Xbox Series X|S supports selected games from earlier Xbox generations; PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. Neither broad statement guarantees that every title, feature, or save behaves the same way.
Start with the games you already own
Make a short list of games you would actually play on the new console—not every title in your account. For each one, identify its platform, edition, and format, then verify that it works on the console you plan to buy. “Playable” can still leave differences in features, upgrades, or behavior, so check important titles individually.
- List must-play games from your Xbox or PlayStation library.
- Mark each as a digital purchase or a physical disc.
- Check title-specific compatibility and any notes about features, upgrades, or saves.
What carries forward from Xbox and PlayStation?
Xbox: selected games from three generations
Xbox says Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games. Eligible digital games appear in the console’s Ready to Install area. To play a compatible disc-based game, keep the disc in the drive after installation; Xbox Series S is digital-only. Xbox says backward compatibility is free for eligible games, but downloads may be required and features vary by title. See Xbox’s backward compatibility guidance.
PlayStation: the overwhelming majority of PS4 games on PS5
PlayStation says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. It also cautions that some PS4 functionality may not be available and some games may show errors or behave unexpectedly. Select titles may benefit from Game Boost, and eligible games may offer a digital PS5 upgrade. Check PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility notes and the individual game’s details.

PlayStation also publishes a figure of more than 4,000 games ready to play on both PS4 and PS5 on its PS5 games page. That figure is useful context, not a direct comparison with Xbox: the Xbox source cited here does not publish a comparable total.
Physical discs may determine which edition fits
If your library is on disc, confirm the console can read those discs before you buy. Xbox Series S is digital-only. PlayStation states that PS4 discs cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition. A digital library avoids that specific disc-drive constraint, but you still need to confirm each game’s compatibility and access under the platform’s account rules.

Compare subscriptions by the games and benefits you want
A subscription catalog is not a permanent list of included games. Xbox says Game Pass titles, the number of games, features, and availability vary over time and by region, plan, and platform. Check the current Xbox Game Pass catalog for your region and intended device, and confirm that each desired title is included in the precise plan you’re considering.
PlayStation Plus has Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. PlayStation’s current tier listing shows online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, exclusive content, cloud storage, and Share Play across all three. Game Catalog is listed for Extra and Premium; Classics Catalog, cloud streaming, and game trials are listed for Premium. Check the current terms and local availability rather than assuming the benefits or catalog will remain unchanged.

Check sharing and saves for your household
On PS5, PlayStation says Console Sharing and Offline Play can share purchases and some subscription benefits with other players using that console. Its support information describes selected Plus benefits being shareable on a primary PS4 and one PS5 when the setting is enabled; it does not mean every benefit or purchase is shared in every situation. Review PlayStation’s Console Sharing and Offline Play instructions and the applicable subscription terms.
For a move from PS4 to PS5, PlayStation says digital PS4 games from PlayStation Store appear in your game library after you sign in on either console. PlayStation Plus cloud storage can be used to move save files between generations, but do not assume every game’s save or feature transfers identically. See PlayStation’s library and transfer information.
