Final Fantasy VII Remake retells and greatly expands the original game’s Midgar section; it does not remake the entire 1997 story in one release. Its combat also shifts from the original’s command-driven format to a blend of real-time action and strategic commands. The enhanced Intergrade edition adds a separate Yuffie episode alongside upgrades to the main game.
Does Final Fantasy VII Remake cover the whole original game?
No. Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first standalone game in a larger remake project. Its story follows the party through its escape from Midgar, rather than adapting the whole of the 1997 game. Square Enix says the remake goes deeper into Midgar’s events than the original, expanding that portion into a full installment. Square Enix’s official overview describes the scope and the shared premise: Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER operative turned mercenary, joins Avalanche’s resistance against Shinra in Midgar.
Is the story the same, or has it been reimagined?
The remake revisits the original’s Midgar setting and central conflict, but Square Enix presents the project as a reimagining rather than a scene-for-scene reproduction. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has said the trilogy draws not only on the original game but also on stories and lore from other entries in the wider Final Fantasy VII universe. That describes the project’s broader approach; it does not, by itself, establish exactly which individual scenes or events differ.
Hamaguchi explained the intent in a January 2026 Nintendo UK interview: “One thing we set out to do in terms of the story we’re telling in the remake trilogy was to not just focus on the original game’s story but to include storylines and lore from the spin-offs and other titles that make up the wider FINAL FANTASY VII universe.”

That means returning players should expect familiar foundations alongside a more expansive treatment and connections to other FFVII material. The available official descriptions support that broad comparison, not a complete spoiler-by-spoiler catalog of changes.
How is the combat different?
The original uses a command-driven RPG battle format. Remake combines real-time action with strategic, command-based combat, according to Square Enix’s game overview. The result is a different combat presentation: action unfolds in real time while commands remain part of the tactical layer. This high-level distinction is clear, but the cited overview does not provide a full ability-by-ability or menu-by-menu comparison.

What does Intergrade add?
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is an enhanced edition of Remake that includes Episode INTERmission, a separate adventure starring Yuffie Kisaragi. She infiltrates Midgar and works with Avalanche HQ on a mission to steal materia from Shinra. Square Enix describes it as a new episode with additional characters, combat, and gameplay.
INTERmission is also part of the remake project’s broader storytelling. Hamaguchi has said it was designed to bring previously optional characters into a more integral role in the trilogy, connect the first two remake games, and introduce wider FFVII lore, including Deepground. Yuffie’s story is intended to put her on a collision course with Cloud and the others.
