Begin with the game and edition you actually own, check what is already included, then choose an expansion for the mechanics, faction, leader, or theme you want.
Why there is no universal first 4X DLC
“DLC” can mean a major gameplay expansion, a new faction or leader, a story or exploration pack, or cosmetic content. Which one is worth buying depends on the game and what you want to change about it. A recommendation can also become outdated when a publisher adds older content to a base edition.
For example, Paradox said on March 19, 2026 that Utopia had been the near-unanimous community answer to “what’s the first DLC I should buy for Stellaris.” The same announcement set May 11, 2026 as the date Utopia, Synthetic Dawn, and the Humanoids Species Pack would be included in the base game. Since that date has passed, check the current edition and store listing before paying for any of those add-ons. Paradox’s announcement describes the change.
What to check before buying
- Choose the exact game and platform. 4X games do not share one interchangeable DLC catalog. Content and ownership rules can vary by title and platform.
- Check the current base edition. Look at the store listing for the edition you own, including any content added to the base game and any free updates. Older buying guides may recommend add-ons that are now included.
- Try the base game or an official entry point first. If you are unsure whether you want more content, play what you already own before expanding your collection.
- Match the add-on to what you want to play. Choose a broad system expansion for new mechanics, a faction or leader pack for a particular play style, or a story or exploration pack for that kind of content. This is a practical way to sort the options, not a publisher-mandated ranking.
- Check prerequisites, overlap, and platform. Compare the bundle against your library and confirm that the content works with your game and platform before paying.
Examples from major 4X games
Stellaris: check the base game before revisiting old advice
Utopia was once the familiar first-DLC recommendation, but Paradox announced that it would join the Stellaris base game on May 11, 2026, alongside Synthetic Dawn and the Humanoids Species Pack. Confirm whether your current edition includes them before buying an individual pack. Steam’s Stellaris DLC listing shows a broad catalog of expansions, story packs, and species packs, as well as an expansion subscription; the store page also describes free updates as part of the active game. The right choice therefore depends on the content you want and what your chosen listing currently includes.

Civilization VI: compare the upgrade with what you already own
The official 2K Store describes the Anthology Upgrade as the complete collection of Civilization VI content and says it upgrades the base game. Its listed contents include Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, six DLC packs, the New Frontier Pass, and the Leader Pass. The US store page displayed $49.99 when accessed on October 7, 2026; that is a volatile regional storefront price, not a lasting price recommendation. The upgrade requires the base game, and 2K warns that owners of standalone content should not buy it because they may be charged twice. Check the 2K Store listing and your existing library before deciding whether the bundle is worthwhile.
Total War: WARHAMMER: an individual Lord can be an entry point
SEGA Support says a Lords of the End Times pack can serve as a new player’s entry point into Immortal Empires, and that a player can try an individual Legendary Lord before buying more. SEGA recommends Boris Todbringer to new players, while noting that the best starting content depends on play style. Ownership affects which races and Legendary Lords you can play; other factions can still appear in the campaign as AI. Content must be owned on the same platform. How to decide whether a bundle is better
A bundle is not automatically the best value just because it collects many add-ons. Compare its current price in your region with the content you would otherwise buy, then account for what is already in your library. Confirm the base-game requirement and platform match as well. Civilization VI’s Anthology Upgrade warning illustrates the risk of paying again for standalone content; SEGA’s same-platform rule shows why ownership compatibility matters.
