State of Decay 3 is currently aimed at a 2027 release, so groups looking for a co-op survival game in the meantime can choose based on which part of its announced design matters most: zombie defense, horror exploration, a world that persists between sessions, or open-world crafting. None of these picks is established as a substitute for its survivor-community management.
What to expect from State of Decay 3
Xbox Wire’s June 7, 2026 gameplay-reveal article says the team is aiming for a 2027 release, not a fixed launch date. The reveal describes solo play or shared-world co-op for up to four players, alongside settlement construction, maintaining a survivor community, and fighting a zombie threat in an open-world survival sandbox. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt said, “We’ve been working on this for a while and we’re aiming for a 2027 release.” Xbox Wire’s gameplay reveal
That mix matters when choosing an interim game: zombie combat alone will not reproduce the settlement and community side. These options overlap with different parts of the announced design.
Which co-op survival game fits your group?
| Game | Best fit | What the source establishes | Main difference from State of Decay 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 Days to Die | Zombies, scavenging, crafting, and base defense | GamesRadar’s 2026 crafting guide includes it among zombie survival games and lists PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. GamesRadar’s guide | A genre match, not an established equivalent to survivor-community management. The cited source does not establish crossplay specifics. |
| Sons of the Forest | Co-op horror exploration, crafting, and building | The Steam listing describes surviving alone or with friends in an open-world survival-horror game and tags it for co-op and base building. The cited listing is for Steam/PC. Steam listing | Its horror focus and setting differ from State of Decay’s community-and-settlement focus; the cited listing does not establish console availability. |
| Grounded | A shared world for a group | Obsidian describes it as a multiplayer survival-adventure. Its Shared Worlds preserve progress so play can continue when the original host is absent. Obsidian’s Grounded page | The shrunken-backyard premise has a very different tone and setting from a zombie apocalypse. |
| Valheim | Open-world survival crafting and exploration | The official site describes player-hosted servers and survival play with others; its support FAQ discusses crossplay and says versions continue to be updated at the same pace. Check the current guidance for your platforms. Valheim official site and support | Its Norse fantasy setting and exploration-and-crafting emphasis differ from a modern zombie community loop. |
Choose by the part of the experience you want
For zombies and base defense: 7 Days to Die
Start here if the group most wants a zombie survival game with scavenging, crafting, and defense. GamesRadar’s 2026 guide lists PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, but does not establish whether the editions your friends own can play together. Confirm the edition and platform compatibility before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
For co-op horror exploration: Sons of the Forest
Choose this if tension, exploration, crafting, and building sound more appealing than managing a survivor community. The cited Steam listing supports the co-op and survival-horror description for PC; it should not be treated as evidence of console availability.
For a world that continues between sessions: Grounded
Grounded’s Shared Worlds address a practical group problem: the world can preserve progress and continue when its original host is away. That makes it the clearest fit here when not everyone can attend every session, though its backyard setting is far removed from a zombie apocalypse.

Consider Valheim if your priority is exploring and crafting together in a player-hosted world rather than matching State of Decay’s modern setting. The official support FAQ discusses crossplay, but check the current platform-specific requirements for the group.

Platform ownership can rule out a promising choice. The sources cited here do not verify full platform-by-platform crossplay for every game, and a game being available on multiple platforms does not by itself mean those players can join the same session.
