Penguin Magician is C tier in Pocket Gamer’s Lucky Defense ranking updated September 7, 2026, for version 2.0.11. That makes “don’t waste your time” an editorial investment recommendation—not proof that Penguin has no niche or that the ranking reflects every later patch. Use the list as a snapshot, then judge recruits by their role, the content you are playing, and the current version.
What the September 2026 tier list says
Pocket Gamer’s guide ranks the characters players recruit—the game’s equivalent of towers in other tower-defense games—into four tiers. Here is its complete ranking, grouped as published:
| Tier | Characters |
|---|---|
| S | Immortal Knight Lancelot, Roka, Lancelot, Kitty Mage, Bat Man, Rocket Chu, Monopoly Man, Verdee, Tar, Immortal Devil Monopoly |
| A | Vayne, Hailey, Sage Kun, Graviton, Master Kun, King Dian (Evolved Frog Prince), Lazy Taoist |
| B | Watt, Frog Prince, Dragon, Coldy, Orc Shaman, Pulse Generator, Ato, Indy |
| C | Bomba, Iron Meow, Mama, Penguin Magician, Ninja, Zap |
The list is an editorial ranking, not an official developer tier list or a documented controlled comparison. It does not supply measured win rates or head-to-head performance figures, so a tier should be read as the guide’s broad judgment rather than a guarantee of results in every mode.
Why Lancelot and Kitty Mage lead the recommendations
Lancelot: damage against high-HP targets
Pocket Gamer describes Lancelot as a magic-damage hero whose Flame passive adds damage based on the target’s HP. That gives him a specific reason to stand out against high-HP bosses, and the guide calls him a must-have for harder content.

Kitty Mage: more frequent ultimate skills
Kitty Mage supports allies by regenerating MP. In a magic-focused team, that can help damage carries such as Lancelot cast ultimate skills more often. Pocket Gamer recommends level 12 for Kitty Mage; treat that as the guide author’s advice, not a universally verified breakpoint.
Why one global tier can miss a unit’s best use
Characters can serve different jobs: clearing waves, dealing boss damage, or supporting and controlling a team. A role-based community guide illustrates the difference by ranking boss killers separately: it puts Lancelot and Watt in S, Vayne in A, and Zap in D. It also says specialist boss killers matter most for the final bosses on harder difficulties. Those placements come from a separate guide with its own perspective; they are not directly interchangeable with Pocket Gamer’s overall tiers.

- STANDALONE TOWER-DEFENSE ADVENTURE: Jump into intense tower-defense action with Kingdom Rush: Elemental Uprising, a complete game for 1-4 players. No need for prior knowledge of Kingdom Rush: Rift in Time to enjoy this sequel's innovative challenges.

- VARIABLE DIFFICULTY & IRON CHALLENGES: Tailor your gameplay experience with multiple difficulty levels or test your skills with the Iron Challenges, demanding perfect strategies to conquer. Offers a tailored challenge for every type of player.

- EVOLVING CAMPAIGN & REPLAYABLE SCENARIOS: Engage in an evolving campaign with big boss fights, hero challenges, and more. Replayable scenarios ensure that every game is a new adventure, providing lasting entertainment and value.
For an investment decision, consider whether a unit solves a problem in the mode and difficulty you are playing, how much upgrading it needs, and which allies benefit from its role. The available guides do not provide a quantitative head-to-head comparison across those factors.
Is Penguin Magician always a waste?
No. Pocket Gamer places Penguin Magician in C tier, which signals a low overall priority in that guide; it does not establish that the character is useless in every stage or progression situation. A specialist treasure guide describes an exclusive treasure for Penguin Musician that can raise the chance of a better Variation performance by up to 20% at max. That is a specific mechanic and possible niche, not evidence that Penguin is broadly strong or should outrank the higher-tier choices.

Pocket Gamer labels its ranking as updated September 7, 2026, for version 2.0.11. The App Store version history lists version 2.0.12 dated September 11, 2026, so the guide predates that later version. The version difference is a reason to check for newer balance information; it does not, by itself, show that version 2.0.12 changed any character in the table.

- EASY TO SET UP, EASY TO LEARN: Fire Tower takes seconds to set up and minutes to learn. The game is highly accessible because of its intuitive rules and visual instructions that show how each card works.
- UNIQUE THEME AND GAMEPLAY: Fire Tower brings players into a unique world of competitive firefighting. Use real firefighting techniques to defend your tower from the growing flames and take control of nature to send the fire towards your opponents to claim victory. Each turn, you must spread the fire in the direction of the wind and then play one of your action cards. Extinguish the blaze with fire engines, dispatch smoke jumpers, and build firebreaks. Harness the destructive force of nature to spread the flames away from your tower and towards your opponents.
- STRATEGIC AND FAST-PACED with HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Fire Tower takes 15-30 minutes to play. Every turn is a tense decision, as players must adjust to changing conditions in the forest and the plans of their opponents. Downtime is minimal, and players stay in the game even after their towers are destroyed, continuing to play as the vengeful Shadow of the Wood with special powers and a new path to victory. Try playing free-for-all or battle in teams of two to change up the strategy of the game.
- VIBRANT ARTWORK AND COMPONENTS: The game features original watercolors by fine artist Kevin Ruelle. The vivid colors perfectly match the beautiful, unique components and create a highly tactile experience that fully immerses players in the theme of the game. The game’s deluxe components include 135 glimmering fire gems, a printed cloth bag, custom meeples, an engraved wind die, and more.
- THE PERFECT GIFT: This game is a great gift for gamers, teens, adults and kids. It’s easy to introduce to new players, but has enough strategic depth to engage gamers as well, making it the perfect fit for family game night, Thanksgiving, or your next weekly get-together.
Lucky Defense is described by its official Google Play listing as a luck-based tower-defense game built around summoning and merging units. Because recruits and their usefulness depend on the game’s changing balance and on what you need them to do, use a dated tier list as a starting point rather than a permanent rule.
