Choose NieR:Automata if you prefer switching between weapon sets, mixing fast and heavy attacks, and using a Pod for ranged support. Neither is universally better: they reward different habits, and the available sources do not provide a standardized head-to-head combat score.
How the combat feels moment to moment
Stellar Blade: defend, then counter
PlayStation describes Stellar Blade combat as a matter of deliberate attacks, defense, and evasion. Its guidance is to learn enemy attack patterns and counter with precision, particularly in boss fights. The practical rhythm is to watch an enemy, respond to its move with a timely defense or evade, then use the opening to attack.

That defensive rhythm is more than a way to stay alive. GameSpot’s review describes parries and dodges as the combat’s foundation, with actions feeding powerful special moves. Stellar Blade also has Beta Skills and ranged attacks; PlayStation says the drone’s ammunition can be upgraded and that targeting exposed weak spots can deal heavy damage.
NieR:Automata: build a weapon combination and keep moving
Square Enix’s battle guide puts more emphasis on how attacks and weapons are configured. Players can assign weapons to speed and heavy attacks, prepare two weapon sets, switch between them, and use charged attacks. That gives you several ways to vary your offense without making the combat hinge on one defensive-counter loop.

Dodging still matters. Square Enix says a correctly timed dodge grants invulnerability and an opportunity for a dedicated counterattack. The game’s Pod adds a ranged attack option: PlatinumGames describes the Pod as useful for ranged combat as well as traversal assistance.
Which game offers more combat variety?
It depends on what kind of variety you value. NieR:Automata makes weapon combinations and switching explicit: you can prepare two sets and assign weapons to different attack types. In Stellar Blade, variety comes through skills and equipment: PlayStation describes Beta Skills, while the director’s interview discusses upgrades such as Exospines and Gear. Its ranged drone also adds another way to attack.

Which has the more approachable learning curve?
Stellar Blade has documented difficulty and timing-assistance options. PlayStation describes two difficulty settings, and director Kim Hyung Tae’s PlayStation.Blog interview discusses Action Assist in Story Mode, adjustable difficulty, and Hard Mode after completion. PC Gamer’s review also notes optional assistance with parry and dodge timing.
Those options give players ways to adjust the demands of Stellar Blade’s timing-focused combat. The sources cited here do not establish an equivalent accessibility comparison for NieR:Automata, so they do not support a claim that it has fewer or no assist options.

Which combat system should you choose?
- Pick Stellar Blade if your favorite moments in an action game come from recognizing an enemy’s move, meeting it with a precise parry or dodge, and earning a counterattack.
- Pick NieR:Automata if you want to experiment with weapon assignments and sets, shift between attack styles, and keep a ranged Pod option in the mix.
These recommendations are based on the games’ documented mechanics and the cited reviews of Stellar Blade; they are not results from a common scoring test. A crossover add-on does not change that distinction: the PlayStation Store listing for Stellar Blade x NieR:Automata describes a PS5 cosmetic add-on released November 20, 2024, with cosmetics unlocked through the game’s shop and progression—not a new NieR:Automata combat system.
