Nitro is the fastest coaster in this comparison at a park-published 80 mph. El Toro combines a 176-foot drop with a 70 mph top speed, while Medusa and Jersey Devil Coaster stand out for inversions. The numbers describe different kinds of thrills, so the table also compares drops, ride style and minimum height. Figures are Six Flags’ published specifications for the 2026 season; verify current operations and restrictions with the park before visiting.
Great Adventure coaster heights, speeds and minimum heights
This is a comparison of prominent coasters with specifications available from Six Flags, not a complete verified specification list for every coaster at the park. “Not verified” means a speed was not established in the cited park information; it does not mean the ride has no speed specification.
| Coaster | Published height or drop | Published speed | Thrill profile | Minimum height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nitro | 233-foot lift hill; 215-foot drop | 80 mph | Hypercoaster with airtime hills, a hammerhead turn and a helix | 54 in |
| El Toro | 176-foot drop at 76° | 70 mph | Wooden coaster; nine described airtime opportunities | 48 in |
| Medusa | 142-foot climb; 132-foot drop | Not verified | Floorless coaster with seven inversions | 54 in |
| Jersey Devil Coaster | 130-foot hill; 87° drop | Not verified | Single-rail coaster with three inversions and airtime hills | 48 in |
| Skull Mountain | 37-foot actual drop; Six Flags says it feels like about 100 feet | Not verified | Indoor coaster; darkness changes the perceived scale | 48 in; 44 in when accompanied |
| THE DARK KNIGHT Coaster | 45 feet | Not verified | Enclosed ride with six 180-degree turns | 48 in |
Six Flags’ official attraction pages are the source for the measurements and height requirements above, except THE DARK KNIGHT Coaster’s minimum height, which is listed on the park’s 2025 map. Some official pages display speed, length or elevation fields as zero; those apparent display artifacts are not ride specifications, so no missing speed is inferred from them.
Which Great Adventure coaster is tallest or fastest?
Fastest: Nitro
Nitro has the highest verified speed in this comparison: Six Flags lists it at 80 mph. That is a top-speed figure, not a complete measure of how intense the ride feels; its large drop and sequence of hills also shape the experience.

Largest stated drop: El Toro
El Toro’s published 176-foot drop is the largest stated drop in this group, and Six Flags gives its speed as 70 mph. The park also describes nine opportunities to experience zero gravity. Those airtime moments make it a different comparison from Nitro’s larger lift hill and sequence of hills.
Nitro has the tallest stated lift hill here at 233 feet, but a lift-hill height is not the same measure as a drop height. Jersey Devil Coaster’s 130-foot hill and 87-degree drop make it the sharpest stated drop angle in this table.
How the thrill profiles differ
For speed and airtime
Nitro is the clearest choice if top speed is your main comparison point. El Toro offers a wooden-coaster ride with a steep drop and park-described airtime opportunities. Jersey Devil Coaster also includes airtime hills, but Six Flags’ stated figures here emphasize its drop angle and inversions rather than speed.
For inversions and ride position
Medusa has seven inversions and a floorless design; Jersey Devil Coaster has three inversions and a single-rail design. Those features distinguish their ride experiences, but inversion count alone does not establish which coaster feels more intense to a particular rider.

- 546 ASSORTED PIECES –This K’NEX Education set includes 546 parts, plus a battery-powered motor, for a single child or a team of two to three children building a working roller coaster. Two additional models are also included in this set — a ramp and a half-pipe — which can be built one at a time. The set requires two AA batteries, which are not included.
- OFFERS HANDS-ON LEARNING – K’NEX Education models offer proactive opportunities for introducing children to scientific inquiry, investigation, and experimentation. Inquiry-based lessons challenge young learners as they build, investigate, problem-solve, discuss, and evaluate scientific and design principles in action.
- EXPERIMENT GUIDE – Once a ride is built, an activity booklet guides learners through three hands-on, inquiry-based experiments. This experiment guide aligns with the national STEM standards and is designed for grades 5‒9. Students will learn about the relationships between time, distance, speed, and more!
- PROMOTES TEAMWORK – This educational engineering set is more fun when constructed with friends. One to three kids can put their heads together and figure out the structure, exchanging ideas as they tinker with the bits and parts, and solving the model faster through teamwork. They’ll build camaraderie and develop social skills as they play.
- STEAMagination: It’s the connection of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts & math) with a child’s natural curiosity and creativity and it powers the fun of each and every K’NEX building set. Building with K’NEX puts children on a path towards a fundamental understanding of STEAM/STEM subjects.
For enclosed, dark rides
Skull Mountain’s 37-foot drop is much smaller by measurement than the major outdoor drops above, but Six Flags says it feels like about 100 feet. Its indoor darkness can make the ride feel more disorienting because riders cannot see the track ahead. THE DARK KNIGHT Coaster is also enclosed and features six 180-degree turns; its listed height is 45 feet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing by your own thrill threshold
There is no objective single “most thrilling” coaster in this comparison: speed, steepness, airtime, inversions, darkness and ride position are different factors. Use the measure that matters most to you, and check the height requirements before planning a ride:
- Want the highest verified speed? Nitro, at 80 mph.
- Want the largest stated drop? El Toro, at 176 feet.
- Want the steepest stated drop angle? Jersey Devil Coaster, at 87°.
- Want the most inversions? Medusa, with seven.
- Prefer to avoid darkness? Keep in mind that Skull Mountain is an indoor, dark ride.
Minimum heights differ: Nitro and Medusa require riders to be 54 inches tall; El Toro and Jersey Devil Coaster require 48 inches. Skull Mountain requires 48 inches, or 44 inches when accompanied. THE DARK KNIGHT Coaster’s 48-inch minimum is from the 2025 park map. Requirements and ride availability can change, so confirm current guidance with Six Flags.
2026 season context
Six Flags’ 2026 Opening Day page announced March 28, 2026 as the season opening date and described the destination as having more than 60 rides, slides and shows. In a 2026 update, the park said El Toro received substantial sections of new track intended to improve smoothness and consistency. That is the park’s stated goal, not an independent measurement of the ride experience.
