If people can barely hear your headset microphone, check its mute control and connection, position the mic as the headset maker recommends, then select and test the correct input in Windows and your voice-chat app. A short recording helps narrow down whether the problem is the headset setup, Windows input level, or the app.
Start with mute, connection, and microphone position
- Check every mute control. Inspect the headset’s physical or inline mute switch, and check mute settings in Windows and your voice-chat app. Some headsets have more than one mute control.
- Confirm the connection. Reseat the plug, reconnect the USB dongle, or confirm that the Bluetooth headset is connected. If your PC has separate headphone and microphone jacks, make sure the headset is connected to the correct input; some headsets instead use a combined jack. For a USB headset, try another USB port. Microsoft notes that PC jack arrangements vary in its Windows audio troubleshooting guidance.
- Position the microphone for your model. Move a boom mic into its intended position, but do not assume every headset uses the same distance or angle. Check the headset manual for placement instructions.
Test the selected microphone in Windows
Windows may be listening to a laptop microphone, webcam, or another input instead of your headset. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound and select the headset under Input. Use the input test and listen to the sample recording. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide covers selecting and testing an input, including Windows 10 and Windows 11 steps.
Use the recording to choose the next check:
- The recording is quiet: Check the physical mute, mic placement, selected input, input level, and connection.
- The recording is clear, but callers hear a quiet mic: Check the microphone selected inside the calling or game-chat app, along with its mute controls. An app can use a different input from Windows’ default.
- The headset mic is missing from the input list: Recheck its connection or Bluetooth pairing. If it remains absent, continue to Windows troubleshooting and driver checks.
Raise input volume in small steps
If the correct headset is selected but its test recording is too quiet, increase its input level and test again. In Windows 11, use the selected device’s Input volume control in Sound settings. In Windows 10, Microsoft’s instructions describe opening the device properties and adjusting Microphone or Microphone Boost on the Levels tab when those controls are available.
Raise the level gradually rather than setting it to maximum straight away. Retest after each change: higher input can also make background noise more noticeable or introduce distortion.

Check Bluetooth or model-specific controls
For a Bluetooth headset, confirm it is connected as the intended audio device, then test the microphone again. Available device and audio settings vary by headset and PC; Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide addresses connection and audio-quality problems.
Headset software and physical controls are model-specific. Consult the maker’s instructions for your exact headset. Logitech’s USB headset microphone troubleshooting and Corsair’s headset microphone guidance cover their own products.

When to run Windows troubleshooting or check drivers
If the microphone still does not appear or its test fails after the checks above, run the Windows input troubleshooter. If Windows continues not to detect it, Microsoft recommends checking audio drivers through Device Manager, including updating or reinstalling them as appropriate. Follow the PC or headset maker’s instructions for model-specific drivers and software; do not assume a driver change will fix a connection or compatibility problem.

Consider an adapter only if you have identified a mismatch between the headset connector and the computer’s available input, or you suspect the computer’s input port is the problem. Before buying, confirm that the adapter matches the headset’s connector, provides microphone input, works with the computer’s port, and supports your operating system. Microsoft’s guidance establishes that jack layouts differ and suggests trying another USB port, but it does not verify a particular adapter’s compatibility or performance. A port check and test with another suitable connection can help distinguish a connection issue from a headset fault before you replace anything.
