High-tier characters do not guarantee a high-performing team. In Genshin Impact, the four characters need to fit together: one character’s field time can crowd out another’s, elemental application may not match the reaction plan, and bursts or buffs may not be ready when the main damage window arrives. Before replacing anyone, diagnose the team’s roles, rotation, energy, reactions, and builds.
Start with the team’s jobs, not its tier list
Write down what each character actually contributes in this specific team. Useful labels include primary on-field damage, off-field damage or elemental application, buffer or debuffer, and healer or shielder. These are working roles, not permanent character classifications: a unit’s job can change with its build and teammates.
Then ask whether the team has a clear damage plan. Two individually powerful characters can compete for active time if both need long stretches on field. A broad team-building guide from HoYoLAB advises accounting for on-field time and cautions against combining multiple characters with substantial field-time demands (Version 2.5 introductory team-building guide). If one character’s actions repeatedly interrupt another’s setup or damage window, the issue may be role fit rather than character quality.
Write out the rotation and check its coverage
A team is not just four names; it is a sequence of actions that should work again after cooldowns and energy recover. Write the rotation in order, including the skills and bursts you actually use. Check whether the main damage dealer acts while relevant buffs, debuffs, and off-field abilities are active.

- Coverage: Does an off-field effect last long enough for the intended damage window, or does it end before the carry is ready?
- Order: Are setup abilities applied before the damage they are meant to support?
- Cooldowns: Can the next cycle begin when planned, or does one unavailable ability force a long delay?
- Field time: Does an on-field character stay active longer than the team’s supporting effects can accommodate?
Rotation order, field time, and ability coverage are all team-design considerations in the HoYoLAB guide. A rotation that looks strong on paper can lose damage if effects expire too early or teammates cannot use their abilities on schedule.
Check burst availability across repeated cycles
If the team’s plan depends on bursts, note which characters have them ready at the start of the next rotation. A burst that is available only for the opening sequence is not reliably supporting a repeated damage plan.

Energy needs vary with the character, team, and encounter. The guide treats energy cost and management as composition concerns and describes having bursts available each cycle as an ideal, but it does not establish one energy-recharge target that applies to every team. Diagnose the actual problem first: identify who is missing a burst, how often it happens, and whether the rotation or encounter changes the result.
Verify that the intended reaction is happening
Name the reaction the team is built around, then check which character applies each element, when the application occurs, and who triggers the reaction damage. A reaction-focused team can underperform if application is too slow, arrives in the wrong order, or does not line up with the main damage window.

- It is the Taisho Period in Japan; Tanjiro, a kindhearted boy who sells charcoal for a living, finds his family slaughtered by a demon
- Tanjiro resolves to become a “demon slayer” so that he can turn his sister back into a human and kill the demon that massacred his family
- Follow Tanjiro through the story from the “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” anime as he faces demons in order to turn his sister Nezuko, who has become a demon, back into a human
- Master the multitude of spectacular skills of a wide roster of characters from the anime, including Tanjiro and Nezuko, to overcome challengers in head-to-head battle, locally and online
Do not assume every hit applies its element. The character-specific Yoimiya guide explains that internal cooldown limits how often her normal attacks apply Pyro; that is a mechanic-specific example, not a rule that can be applied to every character or attack (Yoimiya advanced guide). In a team built around her reactions, the order and timing of attacks can therefore matter to which hits trigger them.
Audit builds against each character’s role
Review each character’s weapon, artifact set and stats, and relevant talent levels in the context of the job assigned to them. A build may be individually strong yet poorly matched to the team’s plan. For instance, offensive stats do little to solve a rotation problem if the character’s needed burst is repeatedly unavailable.

- The ad-free feature is especially beneficial for a seamless gaming experience. Ads can often be disruptive and distracting, so having the option to play without them significantly improves overall enjoyment. With no interruptions, players can focus solely on strategy and gameplay, creating a smoother and more immersive experience.
- Check whether artifact effects benefit the character’s actual role and damage contribution.
- Look for duplicated set bonuses that do not stack, rather than assuming two copies double their value.
- Prioritize talents according to how that character deals damage or supports the team.
One concrete example appears on HoYoWiki’s Nahida page: the four-piece Deepwood Memories effect does not stack. Giving the same effect to two teammates can therefore use an artifact-set slot without providing a second copy of that benefit. The point is specific to that effect, not a universal rule about artifact sets.
Talent priorities are also character-specific. The Yoimiya guide prioritizes her Normal Attack talent because it accounts for most of her damage in the guide’s described build. That recommendation should not be transferred to characters whose damage comes from different abilities.
Change one thing at a time
Before spending resources on a replacement, compare the candidate with the character you would remove. A swap is useful only if it improves the team’s plan rather than merely raising the individual tier ranking.
| Check | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Field-time demand | Can the character do the needed work without competing with the current on-field damage dealer? |
| Role and reaction fit | Does the change preserve or improve elemental application, the intended reaction, buffs, defense, or healing? |
| Rotation and coverage | Do the character’s cooldowns and effect durations fit a repeatable sequence? |
| Energy | Can the team use the bursts it relies on consistently in the content being played? |
| Build investment | Can existing weapons, artifacts, and talents support the new role, or would the swap require substantial rebuilding? |
These checks help identify the source of the problem before you commit to a rebuild. The best choice still depends on your roster and the encounter; a team that works well in one situation is not automatically the answer for every mode or enemy.
What to include when asking for team advice
There is no reliable universal fix without knowing the team and what “underperform” means in context. When asking other players to diagnose it, include:
- All four characters, plus levels and constellations where relevant.
- Weapons, artifact sets, and the stats you are using.
- Relevant talent levels.
- The rotation you currently follow and which bursts are missing on later cycles.
- The content or enemy where the team struggles, and what specifically goes wrong.
Those details make it possible to distinguish a role conflict from a build mismatch, an energy issue, or a reaction and rotation problem. The community’s team-building megathread groups questions under labels such as “Team comps,” “Character builds,” and “Artifact selection” (GenshinImpactTips weekly team-building megathread).
