For better gaming performance on a Windows laptop, plug in the manufacturer-supported adapter, select Best performance power mode if available, and set the game’s Windows graphics preference to High performance. Then tune the game’s graphics settings for your priorities: frame rate, image quality, latency, heat, fan noise, or battery life. These changes can help ensure the laptop is not needlessly prioritizing power savings, but no setting guarantees a particular FPS increase.
Start with power and a baseline
- Connect the supported power adapter. Many laptops limit performance on battery, and performance-oriented profiles use more power.
- Choose Windows power mode. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best performance if the option is available. Microsoft says this mode maximizes performance; Balanced and Best power efficiency favor other tradeoffs. Available choices vary by device. Microsoft’s power-mode guide covers the setting. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these Windows 11 paths should not be assumed to match Windows 10.
- Record your starting performance. Note the game’s frame rate and graphics settings in the same scene or built-in benchmark. Change one setting at a time and compare under the same conditions.
Make sure the game can use the high-performance GPU
If your laptop has integrated and discrete graphics, Windows can assign a graphics preference to a game. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, choose Options, select High performance, save, and restart the game. Windows may show the name of the GPU associated with that preference. Microsoft documents this control in its Windows 11 graphics and windowed-game guidance.
This preference is useful when a game appears to be using the less powerful GPU, but it is not a universal manual switch: the laptop’s graphics design and vendor software can affect how selection works. A single-GPU laptop has no meaningful alternative to choose. Some systems also switch GPUs dynamically rather than exposing a permanent choice.
Use Windows 11 windowed-game optimization only when it fits
For a compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 game running windowed or borderless-windowed, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics and enable Optimizations for windowed games. Restart the game after changing the setting. Microsoft says this can move compatible games to a flip-model presentation path, reduce frame latency, and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. It is not a universal setting for every game, graphics API, or fullscreen mode; see Microsoft’s explanation and scope.

BatteryBoost is intended for unplugged play and lets users target a frame rate to balance gameplay and battery use; it is not a maximum-FPS mode. WhisperMode targets quieter, more power-efficient play by pacing frame rates and adjusting graphics choices on supported systems. Expect possible tradeoffs in frame rate or image quality rather than treating either feature as a performance boost.
AMD laptops
AMD’s Smart Technologies overview describes SmartShift Max as dynamically directing power between Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics. SmartShift Eco is designed to extend unplugged play by using integrated graphics on battery and shifting to Radeon graphics when plugged in; SmartAccess Graphics selects integrated or discrete graphics based on workload on supported configurations. Radeon Super Resolution is an upscaling option for supported hardware and software.

AMD’s older Switchable Graphics instructions describe Power Saving (integrated graphics) and High Performance (discrete graphics), with greater power use for the latter. The interface may be legacy: current control locations can depend on software version, and Windows may manage the preference instead.
Tune in-game graphics one option at a time
There is no universal graphics preset or setting order that suits every game and laptop GPU. Use the game’s own graphics menu and compare the same scene or benchmark after each change. If the game offers supported upscaling—such as DLSS or AMD Radeon Super Resolution—compare its image quality and performance in that game; support and results depend on the game and hardware.

- Render resolution and upscaling: Lowering render resolution or using supported upscaling can reduce rendering workload, usually with an image-quality tradeoff.
- Ray tracing and shadows: If performance is below your target, try reducing demanding visual effects such as ray tracing or shadow quality, then compare the result.
- Frame caps: A cap can limit unnecessary rendering and may help manage heat, noise, or battery use. Set it to suit your display and preferred smoothness rather than assuming uncapped frame rates are always better.
These are general tuning approaches, not guaranteed improvements. Keep the change only if the comparison helps your own priority.
Match the setting to the priority
| Priority | Settings or features to consider | Tradeoff or caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Highest available performance while plugged in | Windows Best performance; per-game High performance GPU preference; the laptop maker’s performance profile | Can increase power use, heat, and fan noise; options vary by device. |
| Longer play away from an outlet | A battery-oriented feature such as NVIDIA BatteryBoost, if supported, plus lower game demands | May pace or reduce frame rate and/or image quality; not peak performance. |
| Quieter play | NVIDIA WhisperMode, if supported, or the laptop maker’s quiet profile | May reduce or pace frame rates and graphics settings to lower noise and power use. |
| Lower latency in a supported windowed game | Windows 11 Optimizations for windowed games | Applies to compatible DirectX 10/11 games in windowed or borderless mode; restart after changing. |
| More image quality within a performance budget | Supported upscaling such as DLSS or Radeon Super Resolution | Availability and image quality depend on the game and hardware. |
Why a laptop may still have low FPS
- The game may not be using the intended GPU. Check Windows Graphics preferences and any supported vendor graphics controls.
- The laptop may be prioritizing efficiency. Confirm it is plugged in and check Windows power mode and the manufacturer’s profile.
- The chosen mode may deliberately limit performance. BatteryBoost, WhisperMode, and quiet profiles prioritize battery life or acoustics over maximum frame rate.
- The game’s visual settings may be too demanding for your target. Compare changes to resolution, upscaling, ray tracing, shadows, or a frame cap one at a time.
If you are considering manual GPU tuning, treat it as an advanced step rather than a beginner fix. AMD says default GPU and memory settings provide the best performance for most users and describes tuning as requiring advanced technical knowledge. Its Radeon WattMan tuning guidance explains that caution; this checklist does not require changing clocks or voltage.
