Choose RuneScape if you want its newer skill systems and ability-driven combat options; choose Old School RuneScape if its distinct classic presentation and community-poll-led development appeal more. Both are active, evolving games—not a current game and a frozen 2007 copy—and a single Jagex account can access both. Your character progress, stats and items remain separate, so returning players should first identify which game holds the character they want to play.

What is the difference between RuneScape and Old School RuneScape?

RuneScape is the long-running modern version, with newer skills and combat options. Old School RuneScape (OSRS) began from a 2007 backup and launched in 2013, but it has continued to receive new content. Jagex describes the two as separately progressed games accessed through one account ecosystem: each has its own character profile, and stats, items and other progress do not transfer. Jagex Support explains the account and profile distinction.

That means “Old School” describes a distinct game direction and presentation, not an untouched archive of the 2007 game. RuneScape, meanwhile, has also changed recently. Jagex’s RuneScape Reignited page describes revisions to combat, the interface and other systems, and says Treasure Hunter and Hero Pass were removed and plugins are officially supported. The page also identifies 2027 as a roadmap year. Those statements are about RuneScape, not OSRS, and roadmap details can change.

Which game fits the way you want to play?

Choose based on… RuneScape Old School RuneScape
Your existing character Play here if this is where the character and items you want to resume are stored. Play here if this is where your desired character is stored; it has a separate profile.
Combat options Offers Evolution of Combat abilities and Revolution mode, as well as Legacy mode. Offers the alternative classic presentation; the official sources cited here do not establish a direct one-to-one mechanics comparison.
Skills The current skills guide includes Archaeology, Invention and Necromancy. Jagex’s 2026 overview lists 23 skills; the count can change with updates.
How new content is decided Jagex describes updates and a roadmap on the Reignited page. Jagex says proposed content is polled and needs at least 75% approval to pass.

These are fit recommendations based on the games’ stated features, not a claim that one is objectively better. There is no basis here for declaring either version easier, more popular, better for casual play or home to a larger community.

RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg
  • Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
  • Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.

Pick RuneScape for its newer skills and combat choices

RuneScape is the more natural starting point if you are interested in skills such as Archaeology, Invention or Necromancy, or want ability-based combat. Evolution of Combat (EoC) offers abilities, and Revolution can automate ability use. If you prefer regular auto-attacks and weapon special attacks, RuneScape also has Legacy mode. Its interface mode and combat mode can be configured separately, so do not assume that playing RuneScape means using one fixed setup. See Jagex’s RuneScape skills guide and its combat guide.

Pick Old School for its classic presentation and polling model

OSRS may suit you better if its distinctive classic presentation is the main draw and you value a visible player vote on proposed content. Jagex’s current overview says more than 1,000 poll questions have been asked since the 2013 launch, and proposals receiving 75% or higher pass. That is a specific approval rule for the content-poll system, not a promise that every player suggestion will be adopted. The same overview lists 23 skills, a figure that may change as the game updates. See Jagex’s Old School RuneScape overview.

How combat differs—and how to try the options

RuneScape’s EoC gives players abilities, while Revolution can trigger abilities automatically. Legacy mode instead uses regular auto-attacks and weapon special attacks. RuneScape lets you configure combat and interface modes separately, giving players who prefer a more traditional setup an alternative to EoC. Jagex’s official material supports describing OSRS as the classic-presentation alternative, but does not establish a precise mechanics-by-mechanics comparison between OSRS and each RuneScape mode. If combat is decisive, try both rather than relying on a simplified “modern versus classic” label.

Does membership work in both games?

Both games can be sampled free and offer optional membership for additional content. Jagex advertises RuneScape membership as expanding world access and adding 12 exclusive skills, 45 members-only bosses, player housing and ports. Its OSRS membership page promotes additional regions, quests, skills, bosses, player housing, bank capacity and member worlds. These are each game’s own advertised benefits, not a feature-for-feature comparison; check the current official pages for local plan terms and billing before subscribing.

Still, you may want to say a prayer before taking this quest on…

Membership and character progress should not be confused with a shared economy. OSRS Bonds are tradeable in Old School and can be redeemed for Old School membership. Jagex says they cannot be transferred into RuneScape for RuneCoins or Keys. See Jagex’s Old School Bonds guidance.

Returning player? Find your character before you choose

A Jagex account gives access to both games, but the profiles are independent: character information, stats and items do not transfer. Before spending time rebuilding, sign in and check which version contains the character you remember. Then launch that version to continue with that profile. Starting the other game means beginning with its separate character rather than carrying over your old progress.
