To make a game look sharper, first lower or disable motion blur if movement looks smeared. Then compare the game’s TAA, DLSS Super Resolution, or DLAA options in a scene with both fine detail and movement. These settings do different jobs, and none is consistently sharpest in every game.
What motion blur, TAA, and DLSS actually do
| Setting | What it does | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Motion blur | Intentionally smears moving objects or the camera’s view to create a sense of motion. | Whether movement looks excessively smeared. Lowering it does not fix ghosting, low render resolution, or upscaler softness. |
| TAA | Uses information from previous frames to smooth jagged edges and reduce flicker. | Fine-detail softness or ghost trails around moving objects, alongside improved edge stability. |
| DLSS Super Resolution | Reconstructs a higher-resolution output using lower-resolution input and temporal information. NVIDIA describes it as using motion data and feedback from prior frames. | Detail retention, edge stability, ghosting, and the result at your chosen output resolution. Results depend on the game and its implementation. |
| DLAA | NVIDIA describes DLAA as using the same Super Resolution technology at native resolution for anti-aliasing. | Whether native-resolution anti-aliasing looks preferable to the game’s other options. It is not the same as DLSS Super Resolution upscaling. |
These descriptions explain the intended roles, not a universal image-quality ranking. NVIDIA’s descriptions of DLSS and DLAA are vendor explanations, while the actual result varies by game, mode, rendering pipeline, and output resolution.
Should you turn motion blur off?
If the image smears when you turn the camera or watch an object move, motion blur is the most direct setting to test first. Reduce its strength or turn it off, then check the same movement again. This isolates intentional motion smearing from softness caused by anti-aliasing or reconstruction.
Motion blur is not automatically a defect: some players prefer its cinematic effect. The useful choice is the one that keeps movement readable to you. If disabling it leaves trails behind moving objects, those may be temporal ghosting rather than motion blur.

Does TAA make games blurry?
It can soften fine detail, but TAA’s purpose is to smooth aliasing and reduce flicker by using frame history. Unity’s Universal RP 15.0.4 documentation describes TAA as using a color history buffer and warns that ghosting can occur in extreme cases, such as a fast-moving object against a contrasting background. That describes a possible failure mode, not an outcome in every game.
Compare static detail and movement separately. A texture may look soft while standing still, while edges may shimmer less during movement. Conversely, trails behind a moving object point to temporal artifacts rather than ordinary loss of crispness alone.

Is DLSS sharper than native rendering?
There is no reliable across-games answer. DLSS Super Resolution uses lower-resolution input and temporal information to produce a higher-resolution output; its result depends on the selected mode, game implementation, and target resolution. Compare it with the game’s native-rendering option in the scene and at the display resolution you actually use rather than assuming that “native” or “DLSS” must always look sharper.
Unexpected softness can originate in implementation details, not just the player-facing mode. NVIDIA’s Streamline integration guidance identifies motion-vector accuracy, jitter, mip bias, and the upscaler’s place in the rendering chain as potential image-quality factors. A player generally cannot correct those through an ordinary graphics-menu slider.

How to compare settings in your game
- Choose a representative scene. Find fine textures or thin edges, plus a moving object or a camera pan. Use the same scene for each comparison.
- Hold the output resolution and other graphics settings steady. Change one option at a time so you can tell what caused a difference.
- Test motion blur first. Compare its current setting with a lower value or off, focusing on camera movement and moving objects.
- Compare the available anti-aliasing and upscaling modes. Test TAA, DLSS Super Resolution modes, or DLAA only if the game offers them. Menu labels and available choices vary by title.
- Inspect both still detail and movement. Look for retained texture detail, stable edges, shimmer or flicker, ghost trails, and intentional motion smearing.
- Judge at your usual viewing distance. A difference visible only when leaning close to a screen may matter less than one that is obvious during normal play.
Also note the game’s performance readout if available: the cost of each option is specific to that game and configuration. The official documentation does not establish a single best setting or a universal performance advantage.
Why a lower render resolution can look softer
Temporal upscalers combine current and previous frames, but reconstructing a larger output from fewer rendered pixels places greater demands on the information available per pixel. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 temporal upscaler documentation says that lowering screen percentage means the upsample needs more texture information per rendered pixel to maintain output sharpness. That is an engine-level explanation; individual games can differ in their settings and rendering pipelines.

DLAA, DLSS Super Resolution, and Frame Generation are not interchangeable
DLAA is intended for anti-aliasing at native resolution; DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render. Both are distinct from DLSS Frame Generation. NVIDIA’s Streamline SDK guidance recommends reducing motion-blur distance or magnitude when a developer enables Frame Generation. That is an integration recommendation for developers, not a universal rule that players should change motion blur whenever they enable DLSS Super Resolution.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to choose
- Movement itself looks smeared: lower or disable motion blur and reassess.
- Edges flicker or look jagged: compare the available anti-aliasing options, including TAA if present.
- Fine detail looks soft with TAA: compare other modes the game provides, checking that edge shimmer or ghosting does not become worse.
- You want to use DLSS: compare its available Super Resolution modes against native rendering at your intended output resolution.
- You want anti-aliasing without upscaling: DLAA may be an option if the game supports it; compare it at native resolution.
Settings and supported modes vary by title and hardware. DLSS features use NVIDIA RTX Tensor Cores, so compatible GeForce RTX hardware is relevant if you specifically want access to supported DLSS features; buying a GPU is not necessary to adjust motion blur or TAA.
