Quality or Fidelity modes generally prioritize visual detail and effects, while Performance modes generally prioritize smoother frame rates and responsiveness. PS5 Pro Enhanced is different: it identifies a game with features that use PS5 Pro hardware, not a universal graphics preset. Some games add a Pro-specific mode that blends visual features with a higher frame-rate target, but the exact trade-off depends on the game.
What the mode labels mean
Quality or Fidelity
These modes usually prioritize rendering quality, image detail, or effects such as more extensive ray tracing. Depending on the game, that can mean a lower frame-rate target, often 30 frames per second.

Performance
Performance modes usually prioritize smoother motion and responsiveness, commonly targeting 60 fps or higher. A game may lower its internal rendering resolution or reduce visual effects to reach that target. PS5 Pro can improve image quality while maintaining a high frame rate in some games, so the trade-off is not identical everywhere.
PS5 Pro Enhanced
Sony uses “PS5 Pro Enhanced” to identify games with features that use the console’s hardware. The label does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, or menu option called “Enhanced”; Sony says features vary by game. See Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Names such as “Performance Pro” and “Balanced” are also defined by individual developers. Check the game’s own specifications rather than assuming the same name means the same settings in every title.
Why PS5 Pro can narrow the trade-off
PS5 Pro adds GPU capacity, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s AI-driven upscaling technology. Upscaling reconstructs an image from a game’s rendered output, helping some developers target a higher frame rate without giving up as much apparent sharpness as they otherwise might.
In its 2024 announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment said PS5 Pro had 67% more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5, 28% faster memory, and up to 45% faster rendering. These are Sony’s manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. Sony also said Game Boost could apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games; that figure describes potential coverage, not a guarantee that each game receives the same enhancement. Sony’s announcement
Sony announced an upgraded PSSR rollout for supported games on March 16, 2026, citing improvements in image stability, fine-detail clarity, and performance. The update is optional for supported titles through a system setting. Sony says results vary by game, and players can turn it off if they encounter unexpected visual effects. How PS5 Pro modes differ in real games
The Last of Us Part I and Part II Remastered
Sony’s September 2024 developer feature says both games receive a PS5 Pro-specific mode that renders at 1440p and upscales to 4K with PSSR, targeting 60 fps. Their existing Performance and Fidelity modes remain available, and the article notes that a higher frame rate may be possible if the display supports it. Sony’s developer feature
Insomniac’s Performance Pro
For Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac’s Performance Pro mode combines Fidelity mode’s 4K resolution and ray-tracing features with Performance mode’s 60 fps target. Insomniac Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald described it as a mode that “marries the crisp 4K resolution and ray tracing features of Fidelity mode with the speedy 60 frames per second of Performance mode.” Sony’s Insomniac feature
Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Sony’s March 6, 2025 specifications for Assassin’s Creed Shadows show how modes can differ even when they share an upscaled output resolution. The figures below are specific to this game, not PS5 Pro-wide standards. Sony defines standard ray tracing as diffuse-light global illumination throughout the world; extended ray tracing adds reflective surfaces throughout the world. Sony’s game specifications
| Mode | Resolution | Frame-rate target | Ray tracing | Display requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | 2160p upscaled | 60 fps | Standard | Not stated in Sony’s specification for this mode |
| Fidelity | 2160p upscaled | 30 fps | Extended | Not stated in Sony’s specification for this mode |
| Balanced | 2160p upscaled | 40 fps | Standard | 120/240 Hz display and HDMI 2.1 |
Sony’s posted table showed “extended ray tracing” struck through for Balanced, with standard ray tracing as the final listed specification. Treat the listed 120/240 Hz and HDMI 2.1 requirement as specific to Balanced mode in this game, not a general requirement for PS5 Pro modes.
Quick Recap
How to choose a mode on PS5 Pro
- Start with what matters most. Choose Performance if smooth motion and responsiveness are your priority; choose Quality or Fidelity if you prefer visual richness and the game’s most extensive effects.
- Look for a Pro-specific or hybrid option. Check the game’s graphics or display settings for labels such as Enhanced, Performance Pro, or Balanced. Read what the option actually changes; the label alone does not tell you its targets.
- Compare the relevant specifications. Look at target frame rate, whether the resolution is native or upscaled, ray-tracing features, and any display prerequisites. Requirements are game-specific, as the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Balanced mode illustrates.
- Try the options in representative gameplay. If the game allows switching, compare motion clarity and image stability while playing rather than relying only on a still screenshot.
What to compare before deciding
- Frame rate: A mode’s stated target indicates its intended balance, not necessarily an observed rate in every scene.
- Resolution and reconstruction: Check whether the listed output is native or upscaled and whether PSSR is involved.
- Effects: Ray tracing and other visual features may change between modes.
- Motion and image stability: A still image cannot show how a mode looks during movement.
- Display compatibility: High-refresh features may require a compatible display or connection, but there is no single display requirement for all Pro modes.
