Then check that the game supports your operating system, update the OS and relevant drivers, verify the installation, and temporarily close background software that might interfere. If Steam shows a specific error, use the matching steps below; the wording can point to a different cause.
Start with the general fixes
Steam recommends a basic elimination sequence because launch failures can stem from many hardware and software configurations. Work through these checks in order, retrying the game after each change so you can identify what helped.
- Restart the computer. Fully restart it, open Steam again, and try the game.
- Check platform support and system requirements. On the game’s Steam store page, confirm that the game—and any required DLC—supports your operating system. Compare your computer with the listed system requirements; a system close to the minimum may struggle to launch or run reliably. On Linux, confirm Linux support. If you are trying to run a Windows-only game through Proton, check its Proton community reports for user-reported compatibility information.
- Update the operating system and relevant drivers. Install available OS updates and updates for the hardware involved, such as graphics drivers. The correct driver depends on your specific hardware and OS. On Windows, Windows Update also provides .NET Framework updates that some AMD drivers and games need.
- Verify the game’s files. In Steam Library, right-click the game or open its gear menu, then select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the process to finish. Steam notes that one or more files may fail verification because local configuration files are not replaced; that result alone does not mean verification failed. Don’t verify multiple games at once, or run verification while defragmenting a drive or scanning for viruses.
- Temporarily close non-essential background software. Recording and overlay tools, antivirus or firewall software, proxies, system cleaners, and performance utilities can interfere with a game. Close one suspected program at a time and retest. Restore your normal security protection after a controlled test.
If these steps don’t resolve the issue, match Steam’s exact error wording to the relevant branch below. Avoid deleting files or reinstalling Steam as a first resort: uninstalling Steam can delete game content. Follow current Steam Support directions and protect your installed game files before attempting a client repair.
If the game gets stuck on “Preparing to Launch” or closes immediately
This often means the game crashes as it starts. Follow the general checks above: update the OS and drivers, verify the game files, temporarily close interfering applications, and compare your computer with the game’s requirements. On macOS or Linux, check that the game supports your platform. If it still fails, contact the game’s developer for help specific to that title.

If Steam says “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
Check your antivirus alerts and quarantine before trying to replace files. Steam says a security program mistakenly identifying and quarantining a game file is a common cause of this message. Don’t dismiss a malware warning automatically: if you aren’t sure a file is safe, ask your antivirus provider and report the issue to Steam. Only add an exception if you’re confident the file is legitimate.
After addressing a confirmed quarantine, run Steam’s file verification for the game to reacquire missing or corrupted installation files. If the error remains, submit a Steam Support ticket. Steam requests an uncropped screenshot of the error, a System Report, and a list of programs removed during troubleshooting.

If Steam says “This game is currently unavailable”
Restart Steam, then update your drivers and verify the game files, retrying after each step. For a third-party game, launching its executable from the installation folder may reveal a more specific error. Some games also rely on secondary installers bundled with the game; if setup was canceled or blocked, the installer may need to be run manually from the game’s folder.
Steam’s support article for this error includes further client-folder and permissions steps. Check its current instructions before changing folders or permissions, and take care not to remove installed game content.

If Steam says “Failed to start game (app already running)”
A game that hung or crashed silently can leave a process running even though its window is gone. On Windows, open Task Manager, end the game’s process, and try again. If you can’t close it, restart the computer. On macOS or Linux, restart the computer. If you’re using the Steam client beta, try the regular client as well. If the message persists, contact the game’s support team.
If the whole computer restarts or shows a blue or gray screen
A system-wide restart or blue/gray screen is different from a game closing to the desktop. Steam says these events indicate a problem with the computer rather than Steam or the game. Update drivers and firmware; overheating is more plausible if slowdowns or stuttering come before the failure. Check that the computer has adequate ventilation. If the problem continues, seek help from the manufacturer or a qualified professional rather than assuming a particular component needs replacement.

Know when to contact support
If the general checks and the matching error-specific steps don’t help, contact the game’s developer for title-specific launch or crash support. Note the exact error text, whether the issue affects one game or several, your operating system, and any recent changes such as a driver update, game update, or newly installed overlay or security tool. For a missing-executable error, include the screenshot, System Report, and removed-program list Steam requests.
