If a Steam game runs poorly, submit a refund request through Steam Support promptly. Steam’s standard terms cover purchases requested within 14 days and with less than two hours of playtime. You can still ask for a refund outside those limits, but Steam reviews the request and does not guarantee approval.
Steam’s standard refund limits
Steam’s standard refund terms require both conditions to be met: request the refund within 14 days of purchase and have played the game for less than two hours. Steam counts playtime across online, offline, and shared-library sessions. See Steam’s refund FAQ for the current policy.

Poor performance can be the reason you give, but Steam does not list it as a separate automatic exception to those limits. If the game has persistent low frame rates, stutters badly, or fails to launch, describe what happens accurately rather than assuming the performance issue itself guarantees a refund.
How to request a refund for a poorly running game
- Sign in to Steam Support.
- Open Purchases and select the transaction for the game.
- Choose the problem that best describes the issue, then select the refund request option.
- Complete the form, explain the performance problem briefly, choose an available refund destination, and submit the request. Steam may offer the Steam Wallet or your original payment method, depending on availability. The full process is outlined in Steam’s refund instructions.
If you are close to either the 14-day or two-hour limit, submit the request promptly. Avoid repeatedly launching the game to gather extensive evidence: Steam counts that playtime toward the two-hour threshold.

What if you have played for two hours or more, or bought the game over 14 days ago?
You can still submit a request through Steam Support if you miss either standard condition. Steam says it will review requests outside the standard terms, but approval is not promised. Explain the specific performance issue and, if relevant, the troubleshooting you have already tried. Keep the account factual; do not present a performance problem as an automatic override.
Should you troubleshoot before requesting the refund?
No troubleshooting is required before asking for a refund. If you want to check whether a quick adjustment fixes the problem, Steam’s PC performance guide suggests checking the game’s system requirements, closing unnecessary background programs, freeing memory, updating drivers, choosing a suitable resolution, and lowering graphics settings. Meeting a game’s listed requirements does not guarantee high frame rates or smooth performance.

Keep any troubleshooting brief if you are near the refund limits. Steam also advises contacting the game’s developer about unresolved resolution or configuration problems in third-party games; you can find the Support link on the game’s Library page. For Valve games, Steam describes hardware auto-detection and a launch option that restores reasonable video settings.
