Apex Legends Won’t Launch After the Anti-Cheat Update: PC Troubleshooting Steps

Apex’s PC anti-cheat moved to EA Javelin on September 29, 2026. Here’s how to check status, repair Apex files, and handle specific errors without assuming the migration is the cause.

If Apex Legends won’t launch on PC after its anti-cheat change, first note the exact error, restart Apex and your PC, and check EA’s Apex server status and official communications. Then repair the game through the EA app or Steam and follow any instructions that match the error shown. The timing alone does not prove the anti-cheat migration caused the failure: EA also identifies corrupted game files, software conflicts, and Windows or driver conditions as possible causes.

EA’s move from Easy Anti-Cheat to EA Javelin became effective September 29, 2026. The change applies to the PC version; it does not mean console players should follow PC anti-cheat installation steps. EA says the migration happens automatically after updating and launching Apex, and that Secure Boot is not required for Apex’s migration.

Start with the symptom, not the presumed cause

Before changing Windows settings, record what happens when you try to launch: whether the EA app or Steam opens, whether the game stays on “preparing,” whether it closes immediately, and the full error message or code. EA organizes its advice by particular errors and launcher states, so the wording matters.

  1. Write down the complete error text or number, if one appears.
  2. Restart Apex and your PC.
  3. Check EA’s Apex status and official communications for a reported problem. This is a check, not evidence that an outage is currently happening.
  4. Repair Apex’s files in the storefront where you installed it.
  5. Use the matching error-specific steps below. Avoid BIOS changes or disabling unrelated security software unless the exact message or EA’s guidance calls for it.

If Steam shows a download progress bar on Apex’s launch screen, EA says Steam is updating in the background; wait for that update to finish before troubleshooting further.

Repair Apex through your storefront

EA app

  1. Open Library and find Apex Legends.
  2. Choose Manage or the game’s three-dot menu, then select Repair.
  3. Let the repair finish, then launch Apex again.

EA recommends repairing files for general loading trouble and for the anti-cheat runtime integrity error. Its guidance says a fix may be needed if repair does not resolve the integrity error.

Steam

Use Steam’s game-file repair or verification option for Apex Legends, then launch the game after the process completes. EA’s Apex error guidance links Steam users to this file-repair route for error 30005.

Use the guidance for the error you actually see

“The client failed Anti-Cheat runtime integrity check”

EA says this can result from a corrupted file and recommends repairing Apex in the EA app: Library > Apex Legends > Manage > Repair. If repair completes but the error remains, consult current EA support rather than assuming a particular file or setting is responsible.

Error 30005

EA recommends repairing the game files through the EA app or Steam. Its general Apex error page also tells players to delete a .sys file in C:Program Files (x86)EasyAntiCheat and restart. However, EA separately announced that Apex moved from Easy Anti-Cheat to Javelin effective September 29, 2026, and does not clarify whether that older Easy Anti-Cheat instruction still applies to a post-migration installation. Do not treat deleting that file as a confirmed Javelin fix; if repair fails, check current EA support before following the legacy file-deletion step.

Javelin Error #41 on Windows 11 Insider Preview

EA says some Insider Preview builds may lack a renewed Windows Insider certificate. Install the latest available Insider Preview update, restart Windows, and try launching Apex again.

Expired or unsigned driver, or an unrecoverable error

EA’s Javelin guidance recommends restarting and relaunching first. If that fails, its guide points to Microsoft’s Secure Boot enablement steps. This advice is tied to those driver or error conditions; it is not a requirement for Apex’s anti-cheat migration itself.

An error names incompatible software

EA says the named software may need an update or may be disallowed while a Javelin-protected game is running. Follow the message and EA’s current Javelin guidance for the identified item. Do not disable unrelated security software just because the problem began after an update.

If the EA app is stuck preparing the game

When the launcher remains stuck preparing rather than showing a specific anti-cheat error, EA’s app guidance suggests trying these checks:

  • Try a clean boot if the game still will not prepare.
  • Temporarily turn off the EA in-game overlay as a diagnostic check; turn it back on after the issue is fixed.

These are general EA app troubleshooting steps, not proof that the anti-cheat migration is the cause.

What the Javelin migration does—and does not—require

EA’s September 24, 2026 announcement says the Apex migration is automatic: update and launch the PC game. It explicitly says Secure Boot setup is not required for Apex’s migration, contrasting it with other Javelin-protected titles. That statement is about migration setup; it does not override EA’s separate error-specific Secure Boot guidance for an expired or unsigned driver or an unrecoverable error.

When to contact EA or check community reports

If the error is not covered here, or repair and the relevant steps do not help, check EA’s current Apex status and communications and consult the EA Forums. Include details that help distinguish a storefront, Windows, or game-side problem:

  • Whether you use the EA app or Steam.
  • Your Windows version and build, including whether it is an Insider Preview.
  • The full error text or code and what the game does before failing.
  • Whether file repair completed and what happened on the next launch.
  • When the failure began.

EA’s documentation identifies multiple possible causes, and the available guidance does not establish that every post-migration launch failure is caused by Javelin. Use the exact error and current status information to narrow it down.
