Neither route works everywhere in Latin America, and the examples below apply to specific countries and platforms.
Which payment methods work depends on your store and country
Latin America is not one payments market. Supported methods can vary by country, platform, storefront and account region. A payment option listed for one country’s store is not evidence that the same option works on another store or at every game retailer.

For example, Nintendo Support documents buying a digital eShop gift card as a way to add funds without using a credit card. Its regional guidance says, “Players in Mexico can pay using OXXO,” and “Players in Brazil can pay using Boleto Bancário or PIX.” Nintendo says the gift-card code is sent to the email associated with the Nintendo Account. These are routes for that Nintendo gift-card purchase, not a promise that OXXO, boleto or PIX appears at every Nintendo checkout.
Payment-provider documentation also reflects this country-by-country variation: Mercado Pago’s developer country matrix lists different local methods—including PIX, PSE, boleto and OXXO—alongside cards. The methods shown depend on the account’s country; the matrix does not establish that a particular game store accepts Mercado Pago.

How local payments compare with cards

The table gives documented examples, not a complete list of platforms or countries. In particular, PlayStation’s card, PayPal and gift-card details above apply to its Mexico support page and should not be assumed for other Latin American PlayStation Stores.
What happens when you pay with PIX?
PIX is a Brazilian payment method, but its availability at a game store is up to that store and its payment providers. Mercado Pago’s consumer guide, dated August 11, 2026, describes a typical PIX flow for games, apps and digital stores: select PIX, scan the QR code or copy the generated code, then complete payment in your financial institution’s app. Mercado Pago says confirmation usually occurs within minutes. That describes the payment flow; it does not confirm that any particular game seller accepts Mercado Pago or PIX.

Follow the instructions shown by the store or provider and check that the payment is confirmed before assuming an order is complete. If the store does not offer PIX at checkout, the provider’s general guidance is not a way to make PIX work there.
When is a credit card the more practical choice?
A card can be the simpler route when the exact store accepts it and the card works for the account’s country. But card acceptance, currency conversion and any bank or provider charges depend on the transaction. Compare the final amount shown at checkout with any fees your card issuer may apply rather than assuming a card or local method is always cheaper.

Keep the account’s store country and payment method aligned. Steam’s purchasing-issues guidance recommends trying a method that matches the current store country after a failed purchase. Do not change an account’s country simply to obtain a different payment option or price; use the platform’s country rules and support process.
Can a gift card or wallet code solve a declined-card problem?
Sometimes. A wallet code is a platform-specific alternative when the checkout methods available to you cannot be used. Steam support suggests a Steam Wallet code in that situation. Nintendo’s documented eShop gift-card route and PlayStation’s Mexico gift-card option can also add funds in their respective contexts.

Before buying a code, verify its region and compatibility with the account that will redeem it, as well as the seller’s terms. A wallet balance is not automatically interchangeable with a bank payment: confirm that it covers the purchase and whether it can be used for subscriptions or other recurring charges. The cited platform guidance does not establish that wallet funds support every recurring payment.

No consistent cross-country evidence establishes that local methods or cards are universally cheaper or more reliable. Compare the options shown for your own checkout, and check:

- Total cost: the store’s final price, currency conversion and any fees disclosed by your bank or payment provider.
- Confirmation: the instructions and confirmation status shown for the payment method. Mercado Pago’s PIX guidance says confirmation usually takes minutes, but that is provider guidance, not a guarantee for every seller or transaction.
- Future payments: whether the method can be used for the next purchase or a recurring subscription, if that matters to you.
- Refunds and disputes: which seller, platform, bank or payment provider handles a refund or payment dispute, and what its terms say.
- Account fit: whether the payment method and any gift-card code are valid for the country and region of the account making the purchase.
These checks matter more than choosing a method based on its name alone: the available checkout options and terms for your specific account determine what will actually work.
What do the Brazilian payment figures show?
A PagSeguro-hosted gaming payments report attributes figures of 58% of Brazilian gaming sales by credit card and 27% by PIX to a PagSeguro white paper released in July 2023. Those are report-specific figures for Brazil, not a current census of gamers or a measure of payment use across Latin America. The same report says local-payment adoption among gaming merchants can remain limited because many merchants are overseas and lack the means to process locally; that is the report’s explanation, not a rule for every game store.
