What Is a Platform Fighter? A Beginner’s Guide to the Genre

Platform fighters combine fighting-game combat with arena movement, aerial battles, recovery, and knock-outs beyond the stage. Here’s how the genre works and how beginners can start.

A platform fighter is a fighting-game subgenre where players use attacks and movement to knock opponents beyond a stage’s boundaries. Matches revolve not only around landing hits, but also around controlling space, fighting in the air, and getting back onto the stage after being launched. Super Smash Bros. is a familiar example; Rivals of Aether and MultiVersus show how the genre can take different forms.

How a platform fighter works

Think of a platform fighter as fighting-game combat built around an open, platform-based arena. Players attack, defend, and maneuver around the stage. When a hit sends someone offstage, that player must use movement and recovery options to return before being knocked out. The opponent can try to interrupt that return or control the space where it happens.

Many games make ring-outs central to winning: instead of relying only on reducing a health bar, players try to send rivals past the stage boundary. The exact win condition depends on the game and match rules, so check the selected mode rather than assuming every title works the same way. Nintendo, for example, describes Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a game about knocking rivals off the stage.

How it differs from a traditional fighting game

The distinction is not just that a platform fighter has platforms in the background. Stage position, aerial movement, recovery after being launched, and the risk of a ring-out shape the fight itself. Players still use familiar fighting-game ideas—choosing attacks, defending, spacing, and reading an opponent’s options—but they apply them across a larger arena with more movement through the air. Infil’s fighting-game glossary entry for platform fighters places the subgenre within fighting games while noting its distinctive mechanics.

That combination explains why a hit can matter even when it does not immediately end a match: it may move an opponent into a dangerous position, force a recovery, or give the attacker control of the stage. The defender’s route back and the attacker’s ability to cover it become part of the exchange.

What changes from game to game

“Platform fighter” describes a family of games, not one universal ruleset. The examples below illustrate differences established by their official descriptions; they are not a ranking of quality or difficulty.

Game What its official sources establish Beginner-relevant distinction
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo describes stage knock-offs and lists one-system play for one to eight players. Nintendo game listing Nintendo’s beginner guide suggests Mario or Kirby as starting characters, while encouraging players to try others. Nintendo beginner strategies
Rivals of Aether Aether Studios identifies it as a platform fighter and describes story mode, tutorials, and training tools. Aether Studios press kit The developer describes tutorial lessons ranging from beginner to advanced, which may suit players who want structured practice.
MultiVersus PlayStation describes it as a competitive, free-to-play platform fighter and highlights 2v2 matches. PlayStation game page Its 2v2 framing is a clear example of team-based play. Game availability and service status can change, so check the current official listing before planning to play.
Rivals 2 Aether Studios says its goal is to make the game familiar, expressive, and intuitive, and describes shields as easier for beginners than Rivals of Aether’s parry. Rivals 2 FAQ Its defense choices illustrate how related games can approach accessibility differently.

How to get started as a beginner

  1. Learn the controls in the game you chose. Use its tutorial or beginner mode to understand basic movement, attacks, defense, and recovery. Rivals of Aether, for example, advertises tutorial lessons from beginner to advanced in its developer press kit.
  2. Pick a character you can follow. Start with controls and attacks that make sense to you, then experiment. For brand-new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players, Nintendo suggests Mario or Kirby and recommends trying different fighters in its beginner guide.
  3. Practice returning to the stage. When you are knocked away, learn the movement and recovery options your character can use. Getting back safely is as important to the genre’s play pattern as moving in to attack.
  4. Notice position and stage features. Watch where both players are, how attacks move opponents, and how the stage affects approaches. Stages and rules differ, so learn the specific game’s hazards and settings rather than carrying over assumptions.
  5. Set up multiplayer for your hardware. If you plan to play locally, check the game’s supported controllers and the console’s setup instructions. Nintendo’s multiplayer support page explains controller setup for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including that a wired GameCube controller needs an adapter and one adapter can connect four controllers.

Is Super Smash Bros. a fighting game?

Yes. It is commonly treated as a platform fighter, a subgenre of fighting games. The difference is in how its stage boundaries, movement, aerial combat, and recovery shape matches—not in whether it involves fighting-game combat. Nintendo’s description of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate focuses on knocking rivals off the stage, while the specialist glossary explains the platform-fighter relationship to the wider fighting-game family.

Ultimate, Nintendo lists optional accessories including a themed Pro Controller and a GameCube controller adapter on its accessories page.
