Use the Gnasher for point-blank damage; when a rush is too risky, fire blindly from cover instead. If you mean the specific Yank, Mantle, and Counter moves, those are covered in Gears 5 Bootcamp’s Close Cover Combat training—not a franchise-wide dodge system.
How to handle a close-range enemy in Gears of War: E-Day
The Xbox Wire launch guide for E-Day, published October 6, 2026, advises keeping your head down and moving from cover to cover. It says to avoid walking into the open unless you are rushing an enemy with a melee attack. The practical takeaway is to treat cover as your route through a fight: reposition toward nearby protection rather than sprinting across an exposed lane after a target.
The guide does not specify a universal dodge button, invulnerability window, exact counter timing, or guaranteed stagger. Do not assume that a dodge input or counter sequence from another installment applies to E-Day.
Choose your response to the situation
- Enemy within point-blank range: The guide recommends the Gnasher as especially effective for point-blank damage.
- You can safely commit to melee: Approach deliberately and learn the feel and direction of melee swings with the metal pipe and Snub. The guide advises paying attention to enemies behind you as well as in front.
- A rush is too risky or you need recovery time: Stay in cover and use blind fire as a fallback rather than forcing a melee attack.
How to practice counters in Gears 5
If you are playing Gears 5 and asking how to counter close-cover attacks, use Bootcamp’s Close Cover Combat training. The official Bootcamp announcement, dated July 15, 2019, says the sections let players learn Yank, Mantle, and Counter without the pressure of real opponents. Practice the moves there rather than relying on timing advice meant for a different Gears game.

Which advice applies to your game?
| Game or context | Supported close-range option | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Gears of War: E-Day | Move cover to cover; use deliberate melee, the Gnasher at point-blank range, or blind fire from cover. | The Xbox Wire guide does not establish a universal dodge input or exact counter timing. |
| Gears 5 | Practice Yank, Mantle, and Counter in Bootcamp’s Close Cover Combat. | This training advice is specific to Gears 5. |
| Original Gears of War franchise page | Describes kicking or chainsaw-bayoneting downed enemies. | These are described as ways to finish downed enemies, not universal counters to an active close-range attack. |
Do not confuse finishing moves with counters
Franchise descriptions also mention actions such as kicking or chainsaw-bayoneting downed enemies. Those are finishing actions for a downed opponent; they do not establish a dodge or counter that works across every installment. Check which game and situation a move belongs to before applying it.
