Halo: Campaign Evolved is no longer an upcoming release: it launched on July 28, 2026. It is a modern remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, not a sequel, and preserves the original campaign experience. If you want the shortest route into the central Master Chief story, play Combat Evolved or Campaign Evolved, then Halo 2 and Halo 3. You can start Campaign Evolved without finishing the older games first.
Do you need to play older Halo games first?
No. Campaign Evolved retells the campaign of Combat Evolved, so it is a reasonable starting point for a new player. Halo Studios recommends that newcomers begin with the original missions because they introduce the game’s mechanics and tutorials. The studio’s July Community Q&A puts it this way: “For brand new players, we do recommend starting with the original missions as they are designed to help onboard players with tutorials along the way.”

The remake also includes three new prequel missions that can be played as soon as the game launches. They are an additional option, not a reason to complete the rest of the series before starting.
What is the shortest path through the Master Chief story?
- Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo: Campaign Evolved. Choose the original if you want to experience the classic release; choose the remake if you prefer its modern presentation. You do not need to play both to understand the starting campaign.
- Halo 2. Continue here for the next major chapter in the Master Chief story.
- Halo 3. This completes the compact three-game route recommended here for the central arc.
This is an editorial short path, not an official required checklist or a complete chronology of every Halo game. If you want another Master Chief campaign after those three, Halo Infinite is a later option.

Where does Halo Infinite fit?
Halo Infinite offers a later Master Chief campaign set on Zeta Halo. Its multiplayer is free, but access to the campaign is separate and may depend on the platform or subscription arrangement. Check the current storefront or subscription listing for the edition and access terms that apply to you.

Are Halo books or side games necessary?
No book is required for the game route above. If you want more background, Halo Waypoint describes Halo: The Fall of Reach as covering Master Chief’s origins, the SPARTAN-II program, and events leading to the discovery of Halo. Halo: The Flood retells the events of Combat Evolved with additional perspectives. Both are optional lore, not prerequisites.
Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST are also optional detours for players who want more Halo campaigns. They are not needed for the compact Master Chief route above.
