To reduce risk, get it from the game or mod platform’s official page or client, check the security status for the exact file, and stop if its origin or contents do not make sense. If a warning appears, investigate rather than disabling protection or running the file.
Start with the source, not the download button
Go to the game’s official mod area or the recognized platform’s own project page, and use its website or client when recommended. Avoid unexpected mirrors and links sent through messages, especially when they claim an external file is urgently required. Never enter your platform password on an unofficial login page. Steam warns that malware targeting players may be disguised as cheats, fake demos or gaming-related utilities, including mod managers: Steam Account Security Recommendations.
For a quick comparison, prefer a platform download with visible file-level checks and a clear project history over an external or shared archive with no visible scan status or unclear provenance. That preference lowers uncertainty; it does not certify the file as safe.
Check the status of the exact file
A project page can contain multiple files, so inspect the badge beside the file you intend to download—not just the mod’s overall page. Nexus Mods describes these indicators on its Virus Scanning at Nexus Mods help page, last updated December 31, 2024:

On Nexus, clicking the indicator opens the VirusTotal report. Read it as one piece of evidence alongside the platform status and file details; a scan report is not a safety certification. If the file is quarantined, see Nexus Mods’ explanation of quarantined mods and wait for the platform’s review rather than trying to bypass it.
Make sure the file fits the mod
Before downloading, look for a clear account of what the mod changes, what file type it uses, how it is installed, and a plausible update history. Then compare the instructions with the actual download and any included files.

- Slow down if the instructions introduce an unrelated executable, an unexplained nested archive, or files that do not fit the mod’s stated purpose.
- Check the uploader’s history and the file’s time on the platform. Nexus recommends considering downloads, endorsements, and how long the file has been available.
- Treat popularity as context, not a guarantee. A new upload or recently created account warrants closer scrutiny, but neither fact alone proves a file is unsafe.
- Be particularly cautious with self-extracting files. Nexus says these are commonly used by malicious actors and may be blocked or sent for review.
Apply extra scrutiny to shared or imported modpacks
Do not assume an archive sent by a friend receives the same checks as a file downloaded directly from the platform. CurseForge says it scans files downloaded directly through its app or website for malware and malicious code, but cannot scan or verify modpack files friends send and users import through the app. Importing an archive into an official client does not retroactively give it the same checks as a direct platform download. Inspect a ZIP-based profile before installing it. Stop if you find oddly named JARs, unexpected executables, or overrides unrelated to the pack. CurseForge also identifies these behaviors as warning signs:

- Pressure to join a server quickly or a claim that a particular download is required.
- Instructions to install outside the platform’s app or website.
- An unusually small modpack or a pitch built around emotional urgency or time pressure.
Respond to antivirus warnings without rushing
Some mod files can trigger false positives because their behavior or structure resembles malware. That possibility is not a reason to ignore an alert. Compare the file’s platform badge and scan report with its history, description, and expected contents. Do not run it or disable protection simply because the mod is popular or its author says it is safe. If the platform quarantines the file, wait for review or use its reporting and support process.
If you already ran a suspicious file
CurseForge’s advice on its June 2023 infected-mod incident was to run its detection tool, use additional independent malware scans if an infection was found, and change important passwords. That guidance was specific to that incident; it does not guarantee those steps will find or resolve every present-day infection. What a scan can—and cannot—tell you
The platform guidance here covers particular services and workflows: Nexus Mods documents its file indicators and quarantine process, CurseForge distinguishes direct downloads from imported packs, and Steam offers account-security advice. These sources do not establish a universal safety score for mods or guarantee that every malicious file will be detected. No overall infection rate or scan-accuracy figure is established by these sources, so a clean status should be treated as risk-reducing evidence, not certainty.
