Whether higher component costs lead to higher prices or reduced production depends on each manufacturer’s supply arrangements and business decisions. Current company statements also differ: Xbox reported production constraints in June 2026, while Sony said it had secured the memory volume needed for PS5 production in calendar 2026.
Why does a memory shortage affect console prices?
Consoles use memory and storage components, so when those parts become more expensive, the cost of making hardware can rise. Manufacturers can absorb some of that increase, pass some on through retail prices, reduce discounts, or adjust production. A shortage alone does not determine which response a company will choose.
Xbox’s June 25, 2026 price update said the prices it faced for console storage and memory had increased by more than 2.5 times, with another doubling expected by fall 2027. That is Xbox’s reported cost trajectory, not a universal measure of memory prices across the industry. TrendForce, in a December 2, 2025 analysis, forecast that memory modules would account for 21–23% of total console hardware costs in 2026. That percentage is an analyst forecast, not a final observed result.
Will console prices rise?
They can, but the evidence needs to be read company by company. Xbox announced console price changes and connected them to higher storage and memory costs. Sony announced a global PS5-family price increase effective April 2, 2026, citing continuing global economic pressures. Sony’s announcement did not attribute its increase solely to memory, so it should not be presented as proof that memory costs caused that decision.

Sony’s Brazil suggested retail prices
The following prices were listed in Sony’s Brazil PlayStation Blog announcement. They are Brazilian suggested retail prices, not global prices or necessarily current retailer prices.
| Product | Brazil suggested retail price | Timing and source |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | R$5,099.90 | Effective April 2, 2026; Sony Brazil PlayStation Blog announcement |
| PS5 Digital Edition | R$4,599.90 | Effective April 2, 2026; Sony Brazil PlayStation Blog announcement |
| PS5 Pro | R$7,499.90 | Effective April 2, 2026; Sony Brazil PlayStation Blog announcement |
| PlayStation Portal | R$1,899.90 | Effective April 2, 2026; Sony Brazil PlayStation Blog announcement; handheld remote player, not a console |
For a buying decision, compare the same model and edition in the same country and at the same time. A manufacturer’s suggested price is not the same thing as a retailer’s asking price; stock status and delivery timing also vary by seller.
Could a memory shortage make consoles harder to find?
Yes. If component supply or cost limits how many units a manufacturer can produce, availability can tighten. Xbox said in June 2026 that it could not make as many consoles as players wanted. That is evidence of a constraint reported by Xbox, not proof that every Xbox model or country was out of stock.

TrendForce forecast that global game-console shipments would fall 4.4% year over year in 2026, citing the effects of component shortages. This is a forecast made in December 2025, not a confirmed final shipment result. It indicates a risk of constrained supply across the market, but does not establish a stockout for a particular console, retailer, or region.

Will consoles people already own perform worse?
No reviewed company statement or analyst forecast establishes that memory scarcity reduces the performance of consoles already in players’ homes. The shortage affects the cost and supply of components used to make hardware; that is different from a console’s performance after purchase.
Memory can be part of a particular console’s design and performance package. For example, Sony’s PS5 Pro release described its GPU and faster memory as elements of that hardware design. That design information does not show that a market shortage makes existing PS5 or PS5 Pro systems slower.

Could the shortage delay the next console launch?
A shortage could make planning production more difficult, but the available statements do not confirm a next-generation launch delay or date. In a May 2026 earnings-call transcript hosted by Roic AI, Sony said it had secured the necessary memory volume for calendar 2026 PS5 production. Sony also said the timing and price of its next console had not been decided, and expected memory prices to remain high into FY2027 under conditions at the time of the call.
These are separate points: Sony’s stated coverage concerns PS5 memory for calendar 2026, while its next-generation timing and price remained undecided. The statement does not establish what supply will be available after 2026 or when a successor console will launch.
Quick Recap
How to judge a claim about console prices or stock
- Check the market and date. A regional suggested price or a retailer listing is not a worldwide price.
- Match the exact model and edition. Standard, digital, and Pro models can have different prices and availability.
- Separate confirmed changes from forecasts. A company price announcement or a current stock listing is different evidence from an analyst shipment forecast.
- Look for the stated cause. Xbox linked its price changes to increased storage and memory costs; Sony cited broader economic pressures for its April 2026 PS5-family price increase.
- Check stock and delivery directly with the retailer. A projected shipment decline does not tell you whether a specific item is available near you.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
