For the most reliable PlayStation Portal Remote Play connection, connect your PS5 to the router with Ethernet when possible, use stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal, and reduce competing network traffic. Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience, but speed alone cannot guarantee smooth play.

Set up the strongest connection path

Remote Play depends on the network path between your PS5, router and Portal. Sony recommends a wired internet connection for the PS5 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal. If the PS5 has to use Wi-Fi, Sony recommends connecting the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network. Sony’s connection guidance notes that results vary with the network environment.

PS5 connection What to try Trade-off
Ethernet to the router Connect the PS5 to the router by cable if practical. Requires a cable that reaches the router; Sony does not specify a cable category or model.
Wi-Fi Use the same Wi-Fi network for the PS5 and Portal, as Sony recommends. Wireless stability depends on signal, distance, obstacles and network activity.

If the console currently uses Wi-Fi, an Ethernet cable is the relevant purchase for trying Sony’s wired setup; it is not a required upgrade for every household. Consider a different router or access point only if your current network cannot provide stable 5 GHz service or adequate coverage. Sony does not require a new router or endorse a particular model.

Choose the Portal’s Wi-Fi band based on stability

Sony recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal. In practice, the connection still needs a usable signal where you play, so move the Portal and PS5 closer to the router and reduce obstacles between them and it. If your router’s band steering repeatedly switches the Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and that causes instability, Sony says to disable band steering if the router allows it.

Check the speed recommendation—and its limits

Sony’s 2024 update announcement identifies 5 Mbps as the minimum Wi-Fi connection requirement for PS Portal and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. Current PlayStation support guidance also recommends at least 15 Mbps. These are connection-speed figures, not a guarantee of smooth play: Sony says quality varies by network environment.

A speed test does not tell the whole story. Sony’s guidance emphasizes a stable local Wi-Fi connection and, where possible, a wired PS5 connection. The cited official material does not specify a Portal-specific latency target, packet-loss threshold, guaranteed resolution at each speed, or a measured improvement percentage for any individual setup.

Troubleshoot in a useful order

  1. Check whether the problem affects other devices. Test Wi-Fi on another device. If those devices also have connection problems, Sony advises contacting your internet service provider. On the Portal, open the Quick Menu and go to Settings > Network to check its network settings.
  2. Reduce competing traffic. Pause downloads on connected devices and reduce other devices’ network activity while you test Remote Play.
  3. Improve the wireless path. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal, bring the devices closer to the router, and reduce obstacles. If band steering is causing repeated switches and instability, turn it off if your router offers that option.
  4. Wire the PS5 if possible. If the console is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with Ethernet and check whether the connection improves.
  5. Check the Portal’s diagnostic status. Open the Quick Menu and select Troubleshoot > Show Network Status. Sony lists this diagnostic path on its PS Portal software information page.

What to expect on public Wi-Fi

The Portal can work on suitable broadband Wi-Fi away from home, including some public networks that require sign-in validation. However, Sony cautions that public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control. A network that meets the speed recommendation may still provide an inconsistent Remote Play session if its signal or stability is poor. See Sony’s 2024 Portal update announcement and connection guidance for the stated requirements and recommendations.
