Start with the device you need to control: a controller that pairs by Bluetooth or USB is not automatically supported by every console or game. Confirm the exact controller model and platform support, then check connection requirements and support for the games you want to play. For PC, verify each game rather than assuming a PlayStation or Switch controller will work everywhere.
Check compatibility before choosing a controller
Compatibility is specific to the controller, platform, connection method, and sometimes the game. A controller may work on a PC but not on a console, or connect to a system while lacking some features in a particular game.
- Name the device: Identify the exact console model or PC operating system and the exact controller model. Look for documentation that names that combination; do not infer console support from a Bluetooth or USB connection alone.
- Confirm how it connects: Check whether you plan to use USB, Bluetooth, or the platform’s wireless connection. Account for any required cable, adapter, or licensed accessory.
- Check the games: For PC in particular, look up support for the specific game and launcher. Controller support can differ by game.
- Match the setup and inputs: Consider handheld or docked play, available ports, cable reach, accessibility needs, and whether you rely on features such as motion controls, remapping, haptics, or adaptive triggers.
Do not assume that an adapter makes a controller compatible across consoles. Support and retained features depend on the exact adapter, controller, firmware, and platform; verify the maker’s current documentation for that combination.
Choosing a controller for Nintendo Switch
Switch Pro Controller
Nintendo’s Pro Controller support instructions cover pairing and wired communication. Follow the instructions for your Switch model rather than assuming another controller will pair the same way. Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can be used with Nintendo Switch or Switch 2; this is a platform capacity statement, not a recommendation about how many controllers a particular game supports.

For wired Pro Controller use with a Switch Lite, Nintendo says a licensed accessory is required and gives the HORI Dual USB PlayStand as an example. Check current availability and compatibility details for the accessory before buying; the requirement is specific to this wired Switch Lite setup.

Choosing a controller for PS5 or PC
PS5
For a PS5, look for documentation that specifically supports the console. A controller’s ability to connect to a PC does not establish that it works with PS5. Check the controller maker’s compatibility information for the exact model before purchase.
DualSense on PC
Sony says the DualSense can connect to a PC, but support varies by game. Check the intended game’s documentation and the way you launch it before relying on the controller or its features. Sony’s PC gaming guidance explains the connection options and game-dependent support.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 controller guidance lists DualShock 4, DualSense, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers as options. What to verify before buying
- Exact model and platform: Compatibility should name the console generation or PC platform, not just a brand or connection type.
- Connection and accessories: Confirm the required wireless method or cable, available ports, and any necessary adapter or licensed accessory.
- Game and launcher support: On PC, check the specific games you intend to play. A controller recognized by Windows may still need configuration for a game.
- Features you depend on: Verify support for headset connections, haptics, adaptive triggers, motion controls, and remapping on your target platform and game. Do not assume these work identically across systems.
- Physical and accessibility fit: Consider whether the controller suits your play position, reach, preferred inputs, and accessibility needs. An adaptive setup may be more suitable than a conventional controller.
- Personal buying criteria: Comfort, battery life, price, latency, and durability matter, but compare them using evidence for the exact models rather than assuming one platform’s controller is better.
