Are Discord themes safe?
“Safe” can mean different things: staying within Discord’s rules, avoiding malicious code, protecting private information, and keeping an account free from enforcement risk. Built-in Appearance settings avoid the added risks of installing a client modification. With a third-party theme, you also have to consider where its CSS or other resources come from, what permissions or data access the accompanying software has, and whether the project continues to work after Discord updates its client.

How do I change Discord themes?
Choose a built-in theme
- Open Discord’s Appearance settings and choose one of the available built-in themes. On desktop, Discord lists Light, Ash, Dark, Onyx, and Sync with computer. On mobile, it lists Light, Dark, Midnight, and Automatic.
- Adjust other appearance options if useful: Discord’s help page also covers zoom, chat font scaling, message spacing, and message display choices.
- If you want the theme to carry across desktop, mobile, and browser, enable “Sync across clients.” Discord notes that themes can look different between mobile and desktop.

Make or apply a Nitro custom theme
- Open Discord’s Appearance settings and select a custom theme if your account has access.

Can I use custom Discord themes without Nitro?
You can choose among Discord’s built-in Appearance options without relying on a third-party client mod. Discord also allows non-Nitro users to preview available custom themes on desktop. When does a third-party theme mod make sense?
A mod may appeal to someone who wants CSS changes beyond Discord’s supported theme controls and understands the trade-offs. Before installing one, weigh the policy conflict against the customization you want, and assess the software and each theme as separate trust decisions.
