0°N 0°W is the real geographic point where the equator and prime meridian meet, in the Gulf of Guinea off West Africa. “Null Island” is the fictional place concept associated with that coordinate—not an actual island or tourist destination. It is best known as a shorthand for records that appear at (0,0) when location data is missing or mishandled.
What is Null Island?
Null Island is the name given to the point at 0° latitude and 0° longitude, where the equator crosses the prime meridian in the Gulf of Guinea. The coordinate is real; the island is not. Juhász and Mooney’s 2022 paper describes Null Island as a fictional place concept whose significance comes from the way geographic data is stored and displayed.
The authors trace the term’s use for geographic-data “goofs” to 2008, when it was used by Steve Pellegrin. They describe its development from an insider joke to wider technology-community and public awareness, and later artistic use. That is their interpretation of the concept’s history, not a measured account of its popularity.
Why do coordinates show up as 0,0?
Many mapping systems need coordinates to place a record on a map. If a location is missing, invalid, or handled incorrectly, a system or workflow may assign (0,0) rather than preserve the fact that the location is unknown. When that record is mapped, it appears in the Gulf of Guinea at Null Island.

That does not mean every record at (0,0) is necessarily a mistake: the paper notes that coordinates can also be used intentionally. The point is a useful clue to check the underlying data, not proof by itself that a record is erroneous.
Is there really anything at 0°N 0°W?
There is no physical island at the coordinate. Juhász and Mooney’s 2022 paper reported that a PIRATA weather-observation buoy was anchored to the seabed there when the paper was published. A buoy is equipment at a location, not an island; the paper-era report also does not establish the buoy’s present location or operating status.

NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center Buoy Locations metadata describes a dataset covering U.S. waters and adjacent waters, so it does not settle the current status of a Gulf of Guinea station.
Why does a map show something in the Gulf of Guinea?
A map may be rendering a record whose coordinates have resolved to zero latitude and zero longitude. The marker identifies where the data points—not necessarily a named place, landform, or destination. If you see an unexpected location there, inspect the record’s coordinate fields and the process that created or imported them. Check whether a missing value was converted to zero, whether the coordinate order or format was mishandled, and whether the record was deliberately assigned to (0,0).

Why is Null Island more than a mapping joke?
The concept makes a technical failure visible: data systems can turn “unknown location” into a definite point on Earth. Juhász and Mooney argue that Null Island has technological as well as cultural dimensions, including its use in art and popular awareness. The paper quotes geographer and author Matt Parker’s line from Humble Pi: When Math Goes Wrong in the Real World (2020): “outside databases, Null Island does not exist.” Juhász and Mooney are the consulted source for that quotation.
