There is no official or objective ranking of the best long-running JRPG franchises. This editorial list weighs four things instead: longevity, continuity across releases, influence on the genre, and how accessible a current starting point is. Only four franchises have enough sourced history here for a defensible comparison, so the ranking names those four rather than padding it with unsupported picks.

How this ranking works

“Long-running” means a franchise with a sustained release history spanning decades, not simply an old first game. The ranking considers each series’ longevity, how its identity carries across releases, its influence on JRPGs, and the ease of finding a current entry point. These franchises differ in format: some repeatedly reinvent their settings, while others build on a more recognizable role-playing identity. That affects continuity and accessibility, but age alone does not establish quality.

  1. Dragon Quest — Its history reaches back to 1986, and its durable traditional RPG identity has adapted to new formats while remaining legible to newcomers.
  2. Final Fantasy — Since 1987, it has sustained a major franchise identity through a varied catalogue, though changing worlds and stories make continuity thematic rather than narrative.
  3. Fire Emblem — Its Japanese release history runs from 1990 through 2023, with a distinctive tactical RPG identity and entries that can offer different starting points.
  4. Tales — Bandai Namco describes it as a series spanning more than three decades, with an ongoing catalogue that includes newer releases and remasters.

1. Dragon Quest

Dragon Quest began in 1986. Square Enix’s official franchise overview credits game designer Yuji Horii with creating the original using approachable RPG storytelling and level-based character growth; it credits character designs to Akira Toriyama and music to Koichi Sugiyama. The official site describes it as a role-playing game in which the player becomes the hero and follows an epic adventure to defeat a demon lord, calling it a representative RPG of Japan. That description is the publisher’s characterization, not a quotation from a named individual.

The series’ continuity comes from a recognizable role-playing foundation more than from one uninterrupted plot. Square Enix’s overview says later entries adopted 3D maps, wireless communication, online play, and cloud play while maintaining a traditional RPG identity. The same overview reports more than 100 titles and more than 100 million cumulative shipments and downloads; those are publisher-reported franchise figures, not a comparable sales measure across the franchises in this list. Square Enix’s Dragon Quest overview provides the official history and catalogue.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a concrete modern entry to look up in Square Enix’s game catalogue. Check the platform and edition you want before buying: availability and regional versions can differ. Square Enix’s official franchise site is a starting point for the series catalogue.

2. Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy started in 1987 and has retained a prominent franchise identity while varying its settings and format. That makes it one of the clearest examples of longevity without a single continuous story: an entry can carry the series’ name and role-playing lineage without requiring a player to follow one protagonist or plot from the beginning.

Square Enix’s official portal, accessed in 2026, reports 87 titles and more than 215 million package/download units sold. Those figures are the publisher’s reported totals, and the units measure is not presented here as directly comparable with Dragon Quest’s cumulative shipments and downloads. The portal’s series history runs across decades, including the original release and Final Fantasy XVI in 2023. See the official Final Fantasy portal and its series history.

A practical starting point

Because the series changes worlds and stories, newcomers generally do not need to begin with the first game to understand a later mainline entry. Choose based on the setting and style that appeal to you, and check each game’s platform and edition. This accessibility is a strength, though it also means “continuity” refers more to an evolving franchise identity than to one continuing saga.

Star Ocean The Divine Force - PlayStation 5
  • Fly Around Areas Freely - characters can freely move in 360 degrees roaming the skies; Whether flying to explore rockfaces and roofs of buildings, or leaping off cliffs to enter battles, there’s more freedom in terms of adventuring and battling
  • Fastest and Strongest Action in the Series - Characters can subdue large numbers of enemies with high-speed movement attacks, special abilities where you can vanish for a moment right in front of your enemy, and a skill which could kill in one hit

3. Fire Emblem

Fire Emblem brings a different kind of continuity: it is a tactical RPG franchise whose defining format persists across a long history, even as individual settings and stories change. Nintendo’s Japanese history lists Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light for Family Computer with a release date of April 20, 1990, and continues through Fire Emblem Engage in 2023. It also lists mobile titles. The 1990 date is the Japanese release date; it should not be mistaken for a Western launch date.

The dated catalogue supports a decades-long run, but its sequence of entries does not mean every game belongs to one uninterrupted narrative. Different settings and entry points can make the franchise approachable, while its tactical battles distinguish it from more conventional turn-based or action-focused JRPGs. Nintendo’s official Japanese history page provides the release timeline.

A practical starting point

Pick an entry based on its platform and whether its tactical RPG style appeals to you; the history page is useful for seeing the breadth of the series, not as a required play order. Check the listed region and platform when comparing release dates or looking for a particular game.

4. Tales

Bandai Namco describes Tales as spanning more than three decades. Its catalogue includes Tales of Arise (2021) as well as remastered games, showing a franchise that continues both through newer releases and by making earlier entries available again. The publisher’s longevity description is promotional, but the dated catalogue offers concrete evidence of an active series history.

Harvestella - Nintendo Switch
  • World - Players explore various cities and dungeons of the world; In order for players to reach the Seaslight, the four giant crystals that govern the seasons, they must cross a beautiful yet rugged path
  • Daily Life - Vegetables, grains, and fruits can be grown on fields and shipped for money, used as crafting materials, and cooking; Recipes can have the effect of recovering HP or temporarily increasing stats, which will be useful while on adventures
  • Animals - Players take care of their animals: the round bird Cluffowl, the dignified goat Woolum, and their pet Totokaku, which may lead to nice rewards
  • Allies - Players encounter new friends and by facing their problems and different ways of life, you will gain a better understanding of your allies
  • Combat - During battle switch instantly between a wide variety of jobs like the Fighter, who unleashes quick sword techniques, the Shadow Walker, who deals lethal blows with twin swords, or the Mage, who specializes in magic attacks, to be victorious

Tales is a useful choice for readers interested in an ongoing franchise with a continuing catalogue rather than one fixed story sequence. Remasters may offer another way into older parts of the series, although the availability and platform of a particular edition will depend on the release. Consult Bandai Namco’s Tales catalogue for its listed titles.

A practical starting point

Tales of Arise is a recent dated mainline example in the publisher’s catalogue. If you are drawn to an older title instead, confirm that the version you find is the remaster or platform edition you intend to play.

What the ranking can—and cannot—tell you

These four franchises demonstrate different ways to remain recognizable over decades: Dragon Quest preserves a traditional RPG identity while adopting new formats; Final Fantasy sustains a name and lineage through changing settings; Fire Emblem continues a tactical RPG tradition across distinct releases; and Tales maintains a catalogue of newer and remastered games. The ranking is an editorial comparison on longevity, continuity, influence, and starting-point accessibility—not an official industry order or a sales leaderboard.

The documented histories do not establish a sourced top ten or a defensible comparison with every other long-running JRPG series. For that reason, this list stops at four rather than presenting six additional franchises as if their positions had been verified.
