The best PS2 games are not all trying to do the same thing: this list weighs distinctive design, craft, influence, and how strongly each game represents its genre, with critical reception as context—not as a verdict. No source establishes a definitive top ten. PlayStation Blog collected individual favorites, GameSpot and ComicBook.com published their own editorial rankings, and Metacritic orders games by review scores, which can change.
This ranking is an editorial selection across the PlayStation 2’s range, from open-world crime and racing to survival horror and experimental adventure. Sales and aggregate scores help show a game’s reach or reception, but neither alone proves it is the best. The entries refer to the PS2 games; later ports, remakes, and remasters are separate editions, and current availability is not established here.

10. Gran Turismo 4
A vast, methodical racing game
Gran Turismo 4 expands the series’ meticulous approach with a wide-ranging car roster, improved driving physics, and a larger career mode. Sony’s historical PS2 catalog advertised over 700 vehicles; GameSpot also highlighted the expanded career and B-spec mode, which let players direct a driver rather than control every moment themselves.
Its appeal is breadth and progression rather than arcade immediacy: it rewards learning the handling of different cars and working through a substantial set of events. That makes it a strong choice for players who want a long-form driving game, though its simulation-minded pace is not the same kind of instant thrill as an arcade racer.

9. Ico
An adventure built around companionship
Ico makes atmosphere and a simple relationship its central design elements. Its restrained presentation and puzzle-focused exploration give the journey a quiet, distinctive character beside the PS2’s louder action and open-world hits. In PlayStation Blog’s survey of named developers’ and journalists’ favorites, Ico received six mentions—the most among the titles counted in that survey. That is evidence of affection among those participants, not a universal vote.
It is the list’s best fit for players who value mood, environmental storytelling, and a deliberately spare adventure over elaborate combat systems or a large checklist of activities.
8. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3
Arcade skating with exceptional replay potential
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 turns a skatepark-sized space into a fast, expressive playground. Its trick system makes it easy to start linking moves and satisfying to keep refining lines, while objectives give each run a clear purpose. That balance of immediate control and room to improve is why it remains a standout sports game rather than merely a licensed snapshot of its era.
Metacritic’s displayed all-time PS2 list places it first at 97. That figure represents an aggregate of reviews in the listing, not a timeless measurement of personal preference or a guarantee that every player will prefer it to other games here.

- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
7. God of War II
A blockbuster action sequel that pushed the hardware
God of War II builds on its predecessor’s mythological action with larger set pieces and an ambitious sense of scale. GameSpot described it as a technical showcase for the PS2 and a strong sendoff as the PS3 era began. The game’s value in this ranking is not just spectacle: it sustains a brisk action-adventure through varied encounters and environments.
Sony reported 4,244,529 cumulative worldwide sell-in units for God of War II through May 30, 2012. That is a historical sell-in figure, not a current lifetime sales total.
6. Resident Evil 4
Survival horror with a forceful action rhythm
The PS2 version of Resident Evil 4 combines pressure, resource management, and combat that makes positioning matter. Its shift toward a more direct, over-the-shoulder action perspective gives encounters a tense momentum while retaining the vulnerability central to survival horror. Stig Asmussen, identified by PlayStation Blog as a Game Director at Santa Monica Studios, called it “The best Resident Evil yet”—his personal assessment, not a consensus.
Metacritic’s displayed PS2 all-time list gives the game a 96 Metascore. That aggregate supports its critical standing, but the lasting case for it is how well its combat tension and pacing work together.

5. Shadow of the Colossus
A journey defined by monumental encounters
Shadow of the Colossus strips the adventure down to a striking premise: travel across a desolate landscape and defeat gigantic mythical beasts. Sony’s PS2 catalog describes that central journey, while the game’s scale and deliberate quiet distinguish it from conventional action games built around crowds of enemies or constant rewards.
PlayStation Blog’s survey of developer and journalist favorites gave it five mentions, tying it with Grand Theft Auto III. The survey is one useful sign of its standing among those participants; the stronger reason to play is its unusual focus on a small number of enormous, puzzle-like battles.
4. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Stealth, survival, and a character-driven story
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater puts stealth in a wilderness setting, where survival and concealment are part of the experience rather than a backdrop to a string of indoor missions. Its mix of tactical play and cinematic storytelling makes it one of the PS2’s most distinctive action games, and a useful reminder that the console’s greats span very different genres and tones.
ComicBook.com ranked it third in its own PS2 top-ten list. That is an editorial ranking, not a combined industry result; this list places it here for the way its survival premise gives the series’ stealth a fresh identity.

3. Grand Theft Auto III
The open-world template takes shape
Grand Theft Auto III made a freely navigable 3D city the center of a mainstream action game, giving players room to move between missions and self-directed exploration. Its place near the top reflects that design impact as well as the enduring appeal of its urban setting. Metacritic’s displayed PS2 all-time list shows a 97 Metascore, and PlayStation Blog’s participant survey gave it five mentions, tied with Shadow of the Colossus.
The Metascore is review aggregation; the survey counts mentions from its named participants. Neither should be mistaken for a definitive vote, but together they provide context for a game whose open-world structure became a defining part of its identity.
2. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
A polished showcase for console racing
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec pairs a technical presentation with detailed racing systems, making precision and progression central to its appeal. ComicBook.com ranked it second on its own list, citing those strengths. It earns this position for bringing the series’ measured driving experience together with the kind of visual polish that made it a natural showcase for the PS2.
Unlike a score-chasing arcade racer, A-Spec asks players to care about the car and the line through a corner. It is the pick here for a focused, refined racing experience rather than the greater vehicle breadth and modes associated with Gran Turismo 4.

1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
An expansive world with room for a whole saga
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas tops this ranking because its three-city open world gives its crime story an unusually broad canvas. The scale supports a strong sense of travel and progression, while the game’s combination of missions and free-form exploration makes it easy to move between its main narrative and player-led detours. ComicBook.com also ranked it first in its 2025-era list, though this article’s order is its own editorial judgment.
There is also a separate measure of its reach: Circana Retail Tracking Service data reported by GamesRadar+ in October 2025 identified San Andreas as the best-selling PS2 game in the United States by both units and dollars. That is a US sales ranking, not a worldwide sales claim, and commercial success is not the reason it takes the top spot here.
How to choose among the best PS2 games
- For an open world: Start with San Andreas for a large-scale saga or Grand Theft Auto III for the series’ earlier 3D-city foundation.
- For racing: Choose Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec for a focused, polished racing experience or Gran Turismo 4 for broader career and vehicle options.
- For action: Pick God of War II for mythic spectacle, Resident Evil 4 for tense survival-action, or Metal Gear Solid 3 for stealth and survival.
- For a more unusual adventure: Try Ico for atmosphere and companionship or Shadow of the Colossus for a journey centered on giant encounters.
- For quick, repeatable sessions: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 makes short runs compelling through trick mastery and objectives.
What the rankings and numbers can—and cannot—tell you
Different measures answer different questions. Metacritic’s displayed scores summarize critic reviews; PlayStation Blog’s piece records individual favorites from named participants; GameSpot and ComicBook.com publish their own editorial judgments. Circana’s US sales data measures commercial performance, not artistic merit. Sony’s official 2012 franchise release gives historical sell-in figures for God of War games, while Sony’s PS2 catalog describes what it advertised about titles such as Gran Turismo 4 and Shadow of the Colossus.
The PS2 itself reached more than 46.5 million consoles in the United States, according to Circana figures cited by GamesRadar+ in October 2025. Circana also reported 28.3 million PS2 8 MB memory cards sold and a 61% attach rate for that card figure. The attach rate should not be read as the share of owners who saved games: other official and third-party memory cards were available. These figures help explain the scale of the platform, but they do not settle which games deserve the top ten.
For readers looking to play now, distinguish an original PS2 release from later ports, remakes, or remasters. The sources cited here do not establish present-day availability or platform support, so check the specific edition and current store or hardware compatibility before buying.
