Scrappy has five levels, and you upgrade him through the Workshop by turning in a specific set of scavenged items. The full progression needs one Dog Collar, 3 Lemons, 15 Apricots, 6 Prickly Pears, 6 Olives, one Cat Bed, 12 Mushrooms and 3 Very Comfortable Pillows. The fruit total is easy to miss: save 12 Apricots for the final upgrade after collecting the first three.

Open the Workshop and train Scrappy one level at a time. Each rank unlocks after you provide its listed materials.

What materials does Scrappy need?
Scrappy’s upgrade materials fall into two practical groups: nature resources and items found in residential or commercial loot. That distinction helps you plan searches, but neither category guarantees a particular item at a named location.

Keep upgrade items rather than selling or recycling them until you have trained Scrappy through the relevant level. In particular, gathering 15 Apricots across your level 3 and level 5 needs can spare you a separate fruit search.

The places below are community-guide leads, not guaranteed spawn points or official spawn-rate data. Loot can vary with map conditions, and the guides differ in how confidently they describe a location as a top spot.

How to combine material searches into runs
There is no measured route that is universally best. Choose a run based on whether you need nature resources or residential/commercial loot, how many of your outstanding items the area may cover, and how much exposure or competition you are willing to risk.

- Red Lakes nature search: Combine Apricot gathering with nearby Prickly Pear searches. Collect beyond the 3 needed at level 3 if you can, toward the 15-Apricot total.
- Buried City fruit run: Marano Park is a community-recommended area for fruit gathering.
- Blue Gate olive run: Focus on Olive Grove for Olives, with nearby fruit as a possible secondary target.

Scrappy gathers Metal Parts, Fabric, Plastic Parts, Chemicals, Rubber Parts and Assorted Seeds while you are Topside. He does not collect while you are offline or in Speranza. According to the community wiki, a raid must last at least one minute for collection to occur; returns stop increasing with time after more than 15 minutes in a round, and his storage fills after five rounds until you claim it.

The wiki also describes an optional six-item feeding queue. A queued food advances after a round lasting at least six minutes, and different foods bias extra rewards toward different material categories. Feeding affects collection, not the materials required to train Scrappy.
The wiki marks two unusual level 4 reward entries as accurate as of Update 1.31.0, but the cited passage does not state when that update occurred. Exact reward yields are therefore less durable than the upgrade checklist, and should not be treated as timeless values.
