If you like RuneScape’s mix of skills, quests, crafting, and self-directed goals, start with Albion Online for a similar sandbox loop or Old School RuneScape for continuity with the franchise. For story-focused MMO play, consider The Lord of the Rings Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, or Final Fantasy XIV. Valheim and V Rising share gathering and crafting, but are survival games rather than persistent MMORPGs.
This is a comparison of the ten games in Tech Guided’s May 8, 2023 article, not a current ranking or a guarantee of today’s prices and access terms. Those details can change; check each game’s official site before spending money.
Which RuneScape alternative should you choose?
| Game | Best fit if you want… | How it differs from RuneScape |
|---|---|---|
| Albion Online | Gathering, crafting, player markets, and sandbox progression | Dangerous PvP zones put carried resources and equipment at risk; high-value gathering can require entering them. |
| World of Warcraft: Classic | Older-school MMO pacing | The 2023 article describes slower combat and fewer quality-of-life features than modern World of Warcraft. Current access terms were not verified. |
| The Lord of the Rings Online | Quests and a long story in Middle-earth | Its main draw here is Tolkien’s setting and questing, rather than a close match for RuneScape’s sandbox loop. |
| Valheim | Survival, exploration, building, and crafting | A survival game playable solo or cooperatively, not an MMORPG. |
| V Rising | Gothic action, resource gathering, and castle building | A survival action RPG with solo and online play, not a persistent MMORPG. |
| Star Wars: The Old Republic | Story missions and dialogue choices in a shared MMO | Its narrative and setting take priority over reproducing RuneScape’s skill-training feel. |
| Villagers and Heroes | Casual MMO play with crafting, gathering, and housing | The 2023 article presents it as a skill-and-profession-oriented option; current platform and pricing details need checking. |
| Guild Wars 2 | Exploration, dynamic events, and self-set collection goals | Its appeal is open-world discovery, not RuneScape-style skill training. |
| Final Fantasy XIV | A character-led story plus crafting and gathering jobs | One character can pursue multiple jobs; current trial, subscription, and expansion terms should be checked. |
| Old School RuneScape | The closest connection to RuneScape itself | A separate RuneScape version rooted in the 2007-era game, with later content shaped by community feedback. |
Best picks for RuneScape-style progression
Albion Online: a sandbox with real PvP risk
Choose Albion Online if what you enjoy most is building up through gathering and crafting, trading with other players, and deciding how to develop your character. The 2023 article describes territorial competition and PvP zones where defeat can cost you the gear and resources you bring. The more valuable gathering opportunities are tied to dangerous zones, so this is not a low-risk crafting recommendation. The official site is available at albiononline.com; current platform and purchase details are not established here.
Old School RuneScape: stay in the franchise
OSRS is the most direct choice if you want RuneScape rather than a game inspired by some of its systems. It is a separate version based around the 2007-era game, and later content has been shaped by community surveys and feedback. Check the official Old School RuneScape site for current access and membership information.

#1 Best Overall
Villagers and Heroes: professions and home-building
The 2023 article describes Villagers and Heroes as a casual MMORPG built around gathering and crafting professions, player housing, and village-building. Those systems make it a plausible option if you want a more relaxed MMO with hands-on progression. Its current platform availability and pricing are not confirmed here, so verify them on the official site before choosing it for PC or mobile.
Best picks for quests and story
The Lord of the Rings Online: quest through Middle-earth
LOTRO is the natural pick if Tolkien’s world and a long questing journey matter more to you than matching RuneScape’s progression systems. Its official site currently presents a “Play Free” option and a shop with an expansion, but access and expansion terms can vary or change. Review the official LOTRO site for the terms that apply to your region.
Star Wars: The Old Republic: choices and class stories
SWTOR suits players who want story missions, dialogue choices, and moral decisions in a Star Wars setting. Its official site also lists crew skills, group missions, competitive play, and guilds, giving it MMO systems beyond the story. The site offers a “Play Free” entry point, but current account limits and paid features should be checked before comparing costs: swtor.com.
Final Fantasy XIV: narrative with crafting and gathering jobs
Final Fantasy XIV combines a character-driven story with crafting and gathering. The 2023 article notes that one character can pursue multiple jobs, which is useful if you want to explore more than one kind of progression without treating each as a separate character. The current North American official page is na.finalfantasyxiv.com; check its current trial, subscription, and expansion terms before deciding what it will cost.

Best picks for exploration and collection goals
Guild Wars 2: open-world discovery
Guild Wars 2 is a better fit if you want to roam, take part in dynamic events, and set your own goals around exploration and collecting. The 2023 article describes a free base game with optional expansions, and its official page currently promotes playing for free. It is not a direct substitute for RuneScape’s skill-training mechanics. See Guild Wars 2’s official site for current access details.
World of Warcraft: Classic: a slower, older-school feel
The 2023 list recommends World of Warcraft: Classic for its legacy-era pacing: slower combat and fewer quality-of-life features than modern World of Warcraft. That is an editorial description, not a current comparison of every Classic version or mode. The official page could not be verified for current access and subscription terms, so check those before signing up.

Adjacent choices: survival games, not MMORPGs
Valheim: cooperative survival crafting
Valheim overlaps with RuneScape mainly through gathering and crafting. Its core structure is survival: explore a procedurally generated world, build, craft, and fight, either alone or with up to nine other players. It is therefore a better choice for solo or cooperative survival than for a persistent MMO world. Iron Gate Studio’s official news page lists Valheim 1.0 for September 9, 2026; see the official site and its linked PC and console storefronts for current availability.
V Rising: gothic action and castle building
V Rising pairs hunting and resource gathering with castle construction and action-RPG combat. The official site describes solo and online play and identifies Steam and PlayStation 5 availability. Its online play does not make it a RuneScape-like persistent MMORPG; consider it for gothic survival action instead. Details are on the official V Rising site.

How to narrow down the list
- For sandbox gathering, crafting, and trading: try Albion Online, but weigh its full-risk PvP before investing time in dangerous zones.
- For the most direct RuneScape connection: choose Old School RuneScape.
- For story-led MMO play: compare LOTRO, SWTOR, and Final Fantasy XIV by setting and story style, then verify their current access and paid-content terms.
- For exploration and self-directed goals: look at Guild Wars 2.
- For crafting without an MMORPG structure: consider Valheim or V Rising, depending on whether you prefer cooperative survival or gothic action.
The ten recommendations come from a May 2023 Tech Guided article, whose disclosure says it is reader-supported and may earn commissions through links. That date matters: the list is useful for comparing broad game styles, but it does not establish 2026 prices, populations, relative quality, or current commercial terms.
