The ten games below are strong starting points for players who enjoy that kind of experimentation. Their systems are not all interchangeable: some let characters combine jobs, some focus on cross-job ability builds, and others make class choice one part of a broader tactical build.
What makes a JRPG class system worth exploring?
For players looking for something like Final Fantasy V or Bravely Default, the most useful questions are practical: How many jobs are available? Can a character switch roles? Can abilities learned in one job be used in another? And how do those choices affect character growth, equipment, or party tactics?

The games below illustrate different answers. Official publisher material supports the specific mechanics described for five titles; the other entries are included as additional candidates, not as a ranked or definitive list. Job counts and detailed restrictions are not stated where the cited publisher information does not establish them.
10 JRPGs to consider
1. Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles
For sheer customization scale, this is the clearest fit in the group. In its October 1, 2025 announcement, Square Enix says the game has over 20 jobs and 300 abilities. It also explains that abilities learned in other jobs can be assigned to customize each job’s distinct skill kit. That combination makes job choice more than a simple role switch: players can build units around a main job while drawing on abilities learned elsewhere. The announcement lists Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC/Steam as platforms. Square Enix’s release announcement

2. Bravely Default II
Square Enix has an official page dedicated to Bravely Default II‘s job system, making it a natural recommendation for players seeking a job-focused JRPG. The available publisher material does not establish a job count or specific subclass and ability-transfer rules, so those details are best checked in the game rather than assumed from the series name. Square Enix’s official game page
3. Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler pairs each character’s original occupation with an additional battle job, once the relevant conditions are met. Square Enix also says players can learn abilities in the order they choose. The result is a system where a character’s starting identity remains part of the build, while the added job gives players room to develop a complementary combat role. Square Enix’s official game page

- A Tale of Emotion Versus Reason - Follow the journey of Velvet as she embarks on a journey of vengeance towards the murderers of her brother, torn between the person she was and the path her rage has set before her. Can she hold onto who she was, or will vengeance consume all that remains?
- Exhilarating Battle System - Customize your skills to create unique playstyles and defeat your foes by unleashing a flurry of attacks. Engage in exhilarating battles by stealing “Souls” from your enemies to empower your combos.
- A Modern, High-Quality Retelling - Play with new quality-of-life updates, including destination icons, the ability to toggle encounters, early grade shop access, and more.
- An All-Around Experience - Enjoy the immersion with the DLC*, which was launched alongside the original release, including costumes, useful items, and other fun extras.
4. Octopath Traveler II
The sequel makes the original-occupation-plus-battle-job structure explicit: battle jobs can complement each protagonist’s native occupation, and players can combine jobs and abilities. Licenses for battle jobs are obtained through guilds, giving exploration a direct connection to party customization. This is a good option for players who like assigning a secondary role without erasing a character’s original one. Square Enix’s official game page
5. Tactics Ogre: Reborn
This tactical RPG is a useful contrast to systems built around freely combining jobs and abilities. In Tactics Ogre: Reborn, levels belong to individual units rather than to classes. Class-based growth still matters, but it is one consideration alongside equipment, skills, and magic when shaping a unit. Players who want class choice to sit inside a broader tactical build will find a different kind of flexibility here. Square Enix’s official game page

6–10. More job-system candidates
The following games are additional candidates for a job-system shortlist, but the publisher-supported material available for this article does not establish their mechanics in enough detail to compare them responsibly. Treat them as titles to investigate, not as verified matches for a particular job count, switching rule, or ability-transfer system.
