The PS2 games that hold up best are not necessarily the ones with the highest old review scores. They are the ones whose central ideas still feel distinctive, whose controls and pacing remain approachable, and whose atmosphere or storytelling still lands. This list weighs those qualities together; it is an editorial selection, not a definitive or objectively scored ranking. Later editions can also change the experience, so the version matters.
Which PS2 games still hold up?
These ten games make the case in different ways: some remain compelling because of a strong central mechanic, others because of their mood, action, or sheer variety. The order is a reading guide, not a claim that one game has objectively aged better than every title below it.

Shadow of the Colossus (2005)
Its open landscape is less a checklist of activities than a stage for 16 puzzle-like encounters. Finding and climbing each colossus turns a boss fight into an exploration and problem-solving sequence, while the minimalist storytelling leaves room for the world’s melancholy to register. Those choices still feel unusual beside action games built around constant combat and exposition. Sony’s description emphasizes the open world, subtle story, and colossi: PlayStation’s history of PS2 games.
Caveat: GamesRadar says the PS2 version can struggle technically. It points to the PS3 remaster and PS4 remake as later ways to experience the game, but those are distinct versions rather than evidence that the original hardware runs smoothly: GamesRadar’s PS2 games retrospective.

Resident Evil 4 (2005)
The over-the-shoulder aiming perspective makes every encounter a deliberate balance between positioning and shooting. Sony describes the PS2 game as a blend of survival-horror shooting and that camera approach, which it credits with helping set a new standard for third-person action. The design remains legible: enemies pressure you to move, aim, and make choices rather than simply hold fire. PlayStation’s history of PS2 games.
Caveat: The fixed aiming posture and older presentation can feel less fluid than later action games. Its lasting influence does not mean every convention feels modern.
-
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)
Snake Eater gives stealth a survival dimension: hunger and injury management make the jungle an active obstacle, not just scenery. GamesRadar highlights those systems alongside its stealth design. The result still feels specific to this game, rather than a generic sequence of hiding spots and takedowns. GamesRadar’s PS2 games retrospective.
Caveat: Camera control is an important version difference. GamesRadar notes that the later Subsistence edition added full camera control; players choosing the original release should expect more friction from its camera conventions. GamesRadar’s PS2 games retrospective

- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
-
God of War (2005)
The original God of War still has a clear action-game identity: mythic scale, boss battles, and combat that rewards chaining attacks into combos. Those ingredients give its fights a direct, readable rhythm even when the presentation shows its age. Sony identifies those features as central to the series’ early formula. PlayStation’s history of PS2 games.
Caveat: Its combat and storytelling belong to an earlier era of the series, so do not expect the later games’ style or systems. GamesRadar describes the original as having held up well, but that remains a retrospective judgment, not a universal verdict. GamesRadar’s PS2 games retrospective

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)
San Andreas still stands out for how much it folds into one open-world crime story: gang conflict, territory play, customization, and a broad range of activities. PlayStation Blog contributor Chet Faliszek specifically singled out gang territory play and the way its activities fit together; GamesRadar likewise points to its large setting, gang warfare, and customization. PlayStation Blog’s PS2 developer poll and GamesRadar’s PS2 games retrospective.
Caveat: Its scope is part of the appeal, but the game’s presentation and interaction conventions reflect its release era. GamesRadar reported 17.33 million copies sold and called it the console’s best-selling game; that figure is GamesRadar’s attribution, not a sales claim independently verified here. -
Okami
Okami’s painterly look is not just decoration: its brush-based mechanics connect the act of drawing with what the player does. PlayStation Blog contributors praised both its distinctive art and brush system, a combination that gives it an identity few other action adventures share. PlayStation Blog’s PS2 developer poll.
Caveat: Its appeal rests on a deliberate visual and mechanical style; players looking for a realistic presentation or fast, conventional action may not connect with it as strongly.
-
Burnout 3: Takedown
Burnout 3 makes arcade racing feel immediate through speed and collisions that turn a race into a string of high-pressure decisions. PlayStation Blog contributor Alex Evans praised how well it captures speed, adding that it works “even if you’re rubbish at driving games like me.” That is one developer’s personal reaction, but it neatly describes the game’s approachable, group-friendly appeal. PlayStation Blog’s PS2 developer poll.
Caveat: Its appeal is tightly focused on arcade racing and crashing; it is not a realistic driving simulation.

Ico
Ico’s puzzles and emotional weight come through its simple relationship between two characters: guiding and holding hands is part of how the game communicates connection. Sony describes its subtle puzzles, emotional impact, and influence, and notes that an HD remaster later arrived on PS3. PlayStation’s history of PS2 games.
Caveat: Its quiet pace and restrained storytelling are a defining choice, not a match for players who want frequent combat or explicit narrative exposition.
-
Sly Cooper
Sly Cooper pairs colorful, cartoon-styled presentation with stealth and intuitive gameplay. Sony’s retrospective says the debut still shines, and its lighter tone gives the PS2 stealth-adventure format an accessible alternative to grimmer games. PlayStation’s history of PS2 games.
Caveat: The cheerful visual style and approachable design are part of its appeal; players seeking a harsher or more simulation-focused stealth game should look elsewhere.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’s era-defining peers and the case for a personal tenth
The PS2 library is too broad for any single list to settle the question. Metacritic’s all-time PS2 ranking offers a useful additional view of the console’s highly rated games, but a ranking alone cannot establish which titles have aged best: that depends on how their mechanics, pacing, atmosphere, and versions feel to an individual player. Metacritic’s all-time PS2 ranking.
Caveat: This is a reminder that “aged best” is a judgment, not a consensus award; the list’s final selection is intentionally editorial rather than a claim to exhaust the console’s strongest candidates.
What makes a PS2 game age well?
A strong old reputation is not enough. A game tends to feel durable when its main activity is still understandable and satisfying, its distinctive idea remains visible, and its mood or story does not depend on technical novelty alone. Camera and control friction matter too: an influential design can remain important even when its original version feels less comfortable than a later edition.
- Control and camera: Can you act comfortably, or does the original interface make routine play harder? MGS3’s Subsistence camera change is a clear example of why editions matter.
- Core mechanic: Does the central loop still feel different from other games? Shadow of the Colossus turns boss fights into puzzles; Okami connects brushwork to play.
- Atmosphere and pacing: Do the world and story still work without relying on spectacle alone? Ico and Shadow of the Colossus make a case through restraint.
- Access to the right version: Original PS2 releases, remasters, and remakes can differ materially. Confirm the edition and region compatibility before buying or starting a version.
Which version should you play?
If the original PS2 experience matters most, seek the PS2 edition and check regional compatibility before purchasing. If ease of play matters more, a later edition may be preferable where one is available: the cited retrospective identifies a PS3 remaster and PS4 remake for Shadow of the Colossus, an HD PS3 remaster for Ico, and the Subsistence edition of MGS3 with full camera control. These are version-specific distinctions, not a guarantee of current availability on a particular subscription or platform. Check the relevant regional store or service catalog before relying on access.
