What Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Added to the Original Kanto Games

The Sevii Islands are the remakes’ clearest expansion. Here’s how to distinguish their GBA-era additions from features of the 2026 Switch rerelease.

Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen expand the original Kanto adventures with the Sevii Islands and bring the familiar games to newer hardware. But the distinction matters: the Nintendo Switch editions released in 2026 are digital rereleases of the Game Boy Advance remakes, not new remakes. Nintendo describes their content as broadly the same as the GBA versions.

Here are 10 useful reasons the remakes can feel like an upgrade, with the original GBA additions separated from features specific to the Switch rerelease.

What did FireRed and LeafGreen add to the original games?

1. The Sevii Islands extend the adventure beyond Kanto

The clearest expansion is the Sevii Islands, a group of new areas that takes the adventure beyond the familiar Kanto setting. The Pokémon Company describes the islands as home to Pokémon not found elsewhere in Kanto, giving the remakes more to discover than a straightforward return to the original region. The Pokémon Company’s game overview outlines the added setting.

2. The islands give players more places to explore

The extra locations broaden the game’s world and provide a different setting from Kanto’s towns, routes, and caves. They make the remakes more than a visual return to the original journey: there is additional territory to explore. The official overview confirms the Sevii Islands, but does not establish detailed unlock timing, so this article does not assign particular islands to specific story milestones.

Pokemon: FireRed Version (Renewed)
  • This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.

3. The setting offers Pokémon beyond Kanto’s familiar roster

The Pokémon Company says some Pokémon found on the Sevii Islands are not found elsewhere in Kanto. That gives exploration a practical purpose for players interested in encountering Pokémon outside the region’s usual range, rather than making the islands only a change of scenery.

How did the games make playing with friends part of the experience?

4. The GBA releases offered wireless play as well as cable connectivity

The original Game Boy Advance releases supported connectivity through a Game Link cable or Wireless Adapter. Nintendo’s FAQ calls out the Wireless Adapter as part of the releases’ features, while The Pokémon Company’s overview highlights wireless play. That made trading and battling with nearby players a defined part of the games’ identity, though it depended on having compatible hardware and other players nearby.

5. The Switch editions make local trading and battling simpler to set up

On Switch, players can use built-in local wireless through the Wireless Club to trade or battle. Nintendo lists support for up to five players total: the player and as many as four others. That removes the need for a separate GBA cable or adapter, but the feature is local rather than online. Nintendo states that online play is not supported in its FireRed and LeafGreen FAQ.

6. The Switch Wireless Club also includes a group minigame

Nintendo lists a minigame in the Switch Wireless Club alongside trading and battling. It is another local activity for a group, not a separate online mode. The feature belongs to the Switch release’s presentation of multiplayer; it should not be confused with a newly added GBA remake feature.

What should players know about the current Switch editions?

7. Special event encounters include Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Deoxys

Nintendo’s Switch product page identifies special event encounters with Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Deoxys. These are notable additions to the current edition’s listed content, but they are not a reason to treat the Switch version as a newly rebuilt remake. See the Nintendo Switch product listing for the release’s stated features.

8. The games are available on Switch and Switch 2

The 2026 editions let players access the GBA remakes on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Nintendo lists a February 27, 2026 release date for the English Switch edition. This is a platform update, not evidence of new graphics or a redesigned game: Nintendo says the Switch content is broadly the same as the original GBA versions. The editions are digital-only, with no physical Switch release, according to Nintendo’s FAQ.

9. Pokémon HOME transfers are announced for October 2026

Nintendo’s product listing says Pokémon HOME support starts in October 2026, and The Pokémon Company also announced an October connection window. As of October 8, 2026, those sources establish the announced start period, not whether transfers are operational at this moment. Check the current Pokémon HOME announcement and Nintendo listing for live availability. The Pokémon Company’s announcement also describes a special Celebi Mystery Gift tied to completing the Pokédex in HOME.

What counts as an upgrade—and what does not?

10. The comparison makes the GBA additions and modern conveniences easier to distinguish

The strongest comparison is between what the remakes added to the original Kanto adventure and what the later Switch release changes about access and connectivity. The Sevii Islands belong to the expanded game experience. Built-in local wireless, Switch and Switch 2 availability, and the announced HOME connection describe the current rerelease. Nintendo characterizes the Switch content as broadly the same as the GBA version, so those platform features should not be counted as new improvements that arrived with the 2004 remakes.

Pokemon Yellow Version - Special Pikachu Edition New Save Battery (Renewed)
  • This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
  • The game is an authentic copy and a new save battery has been installed!

Nintendo’s FAQ describes FireRed and LeafGreen as “the ultimate versions” of the original adventures, adding features and upgrades to Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. That supports the broad idea of an enhanced return, but it does not establish ten separate gameplay changes. The available official information does not substantiate specific interface, tutorial, save, or battle-system upgrades, so those should not be presented as confirmed reasons without additional documentation.

Should you choose FireRed or LeafGreen?

The sources cited here do not establish the games’ version-exclusive Pokémon or encounter differences. If choosing between them based on exclusives, check a dedicated version comparison rather than assuming one edition has an advantage based on this feature list.
