Which classic JRPG should you play first? Start with the kind of adventure you want: a compact, time-bending story, a sprawling ensemble, an unusual world, or a battle system that rewards planning. This list covers notable games from the SNES and PlayStation eras, but it is a set of distinct recommendations—not an objective ranking. Availability depends on the edition, platform, and region; only the confirmed routes below are stated as current options.
How to choose a retro JRPG
“Retro” covers more than one generation of hardware. The games below include SNES-era and PlayStation-era releases, with different approaches to storytelling, tone, and combat. Choose by the experience you want rather than by a claim that one is universally best. Original hardware and current editions are separate questions: a game’s historical importance does not guarantee that a particular version is sold or playable on your platform today.
10 retro JRPGs to consider
1. Chrono Trigger
Best starting point if you want: a classic-era adventure with a time-travel premise. Chrono Trigger appears in both a retro-RPG recommendation list and GamesRadar’s current JRPG guide, making it a well-recognized candidate for a starter list. Square Enix maintains an official game page, but the sources available here do not establish a specific current platform listing. Check your region and preferred platform before planning a playthrough. Square Enix’s Chrono Trigger page
2. Final Fantasy VI
Best starting point if you want: a substantial ensemble adventure from the SNES generation. Square Enix offers a Pixel Remaster edition and lists it for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. That gives readers a clearly identified modern edition to look for; check the relevant regional store for current availability. Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster page

3. EarthBound
Best starting point if you want: an older JRPG with a distinctive, nontraditional tone. EarthBound is included in a retro-RPG list and discussed by GamesRadar as an older JRPG. Those sources support its place in the conversation, but do not confirm a current edition or platform route. Verify access for your region before choosing it as your next game.
4. Suikoden II
Best starting point if you want: a PlayStation-era role-playing game beyond the genre’s most familiar franchises. Suikoden II is named in a retro-RPG recommendation list. The available evidence does not establish a current edition, platform, or purchase route, so treat access as something to check rather than assume.

9. Choose another SNES-era classic
If you specifically want a SNES-era game, use that as your filter and check a title’s original platform against a reliable game record before adding it to your shortlist. The candidate sources identify SNES-era examples as a group, but do not verify a ninth title here. Avoid treating a recommendation list as proof of a game’s hardware history or current availability.
10. Choose another PlayStation-era classic
If you would rather explore the PlayStation generation, compare titles by the kind of story and combat you enjoy, then confirm the original platform and present-day edition independently. The candidate sources identify PlayStation-era examples as a group, but do not verify a tenth title here. A complete ten-game list requires title-specific evidence; filling the final places from memory would make the recommendations less reliable.

How to narrow your shortlist
- Choose an era first: SNES and PlayStation games can differ in visual conventions and interfaces. Confirm the original hardware title by title instead of inferring it from a list.
- Choose a style next: Decide whether you want a story-led adventure, a lighter or stranger tone, or a system-focused game. The recommendations above flag broad starting points without pretending to provide a detailed mechanical comparison.
- Check the version before you commit: Search for the exact title and edition on your platform, and confirm that the listing serves your region. A publisher page may identify a version without proving that a local store currently sells it.
- Do not rely on unsupported time estimates: No comparable playtime figures are established for these recommendations here. If session length matters, consult a credible, game-specific source for the edition you plan to play.
